Publication Metadata only Evaluation of formocresol versus mineral trioxide aggregate in primary molar pulpotomy: Meta-analysis [Procjena djelovanja formokrezola u odnosu na agregat mineralnogtrioksida kod mliječnih kutnjaka liječenih pulpotomijom: Meta-analiza](2010) Bekiroglu N., Durhan A., Kargul B.Aim: The aim of this study is to present a systematic review of the effects of formocresol (FC) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)when used as medicaments in pulpotomized primary teeth. Methods: Methodology of the study list was obtained by using MEDLINE, PubMed, SCI and Marmara University Library. Totally 165 studies were performed. Studies of interest were randomized controlled trials of primary molar teeth where there was exposure of vital pulp caused by caries or trauma, treated by using MTA or FC pulpotomy, with at least 6 months follow-up, and radiographic evidence. Meta - analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, Version 2.0(2005). Fixed effect model was applied to aggregate data. Results: Six studies that include criteria were used. Totally 195 teeth treated by MTA and 203 teeth treated by FC. The radiographic success for treatment with MTA or FC in the 6 studies ranged from 72% to 100%. Data were extracted from each study independently and entered into a database. Differences were resolved by discussion. The general odds-ratio was found 1.146. There was a homogeneity among the studies (Q-value= 9.865, df=5, p=0.079). Conclusions: Evidence based dentistry is being used increasingly as a tool to synthesize, evaluate, and interpret research to produce clinical guidelines and conclusions. The results demonstrate that in primary molar teeth with vital pulp exposure caused by caries or trauma, a pulpotomy performed with MTA results is not better than FC radiographically observed outcomes.Publication Metadata only The buffering capacity of probiotic yogurt [Puferski kapacitet probiotičkih jogurta](2011) Çaglar E., Sandalli N., Kuscu O.O., Kargul B.Aim: The potential buffering role of probiotic yogurt has not been investigated. The aim of the study was to determine the pH, titratable acidity of a selection of various probiotic yogurts, their buffering effects with an emphasis on the pH range in which the buffer is efficient. Material & Methods: A quantity of 25 ml of each yogurt was titrated with 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide, added gradually by 0.5 ml, until the pH reached 10 to assess the total titratable acidity - a measure of probiotic yogurt's own buffering capacity. Results: The initial pH was the lowest for Activia peach yogurt (4.40± 0.14) and the highest for Danone natural yogurt (5.29± 0.10). The buffering capacities can be listed as follows: Danone natural >Danone peach >Activia plain >Activia strawberry >Activia peach. There were no statistically significant differences observed between yogurts within any of the five groups compared as a whole with one another. (p >0.05). Conclusions: Buffering capacities of probiotic yogurts should be undermined.Publication Metadata only Tooth fragment lodged in the upper lip after traumatic dental injury: An unusual case report [Fragment zuba u gornjoj usni nakon dentalne traume: Opis neobičnoga kliničkog slučaja](2011) Abbasoglu Z., Ozbay G., Gocmen G., Kargul B.Dental fractures are common trauma complications in the oral cavity. When a patient has a laceration in the upper lip and dental trauma to the anterior dentition, an embedded tooth fragment should be suspected. A 10-year old boy was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Dental School, Marmara University, Istanbul with a swollen lip, showing local edema and trauma to the maxillary left central incisor. A thorough intraoral examination revealed a fracture of the permanent left maxillary central incisor involving the enamel and dentin without pulp exposure while carefully palpating the tissues of the upper lip; the presence of a foreign body was felt. This was confirmed by a panoramic radiograph and it showed a radiopaque material, similar to the coronal fragment of the fractured incisor. The coronal fragment of the maxillary left central incisor was surgically removed. The fractured tooth was temporarily restored. After two weeks, the tooth was restored with the fragment using the adhesive technique. A thorough clinical examination with soft-tissue radiographs could provide an early diagnosis and indicate surgical removal.
