Publication Metadata only The role of physical activity, body mass index and maturity status in body-related perceptions and self-esteem of adolescents(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2014) AŞÇI, FEVZİYE HÜLYA; Altintas, A.; Asci, F. H.; Kin-Isler, A.; Guven-Karahan, B.; Kelecek, S.; Ozkan, A.; Yilmaz, A.; Kara, F. M.Background: Adolescence represents a transitional period which is marked by physical, social and psychological changes. Changes in body shape and physical activity especially alter and shape the psychological well-being of adolescents. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of physical activity level, body mass index and maturity status in body-related perception and self-esteem of 11-18 years old adolescents. Subjects and methods: A total of 1012 adolescents participated in this study. The Social Physique Anxiety Scale'', Body Image Satisfaction Scale'', Physical Self-Perception Profile for Children'' and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory'' were administered. Physical activity level and body mass index were assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire'' and Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer'', respectively. Results: Regression analysis indicated that body mass index was the only predictor of perceived body attractiveness, social physique anxiety, body image satisfaction and self-esteem for female adolescents. For male adolescents, both physical activity and body mass index were correlated with perceived body attractiveness and social physique anxiety. Pubertal status were not correlated with self-esteem and body-related perceptions for both males and females adolescents. Conclusion: In summary, body mass index and physical activity plays an important role in body-related perceptions and self-esteem of adolescents.Publication Open Access Cross-Cultural Validation of the Short Form of the Physical Self Inventory (PSI-S)(AMER PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOC, 2018-02) AŞÇI, FEVZİYE HÜLYA; Morin, Alexandre J. S.; Maiano, Christophe; Scalas, L. Francesca; Asci, F. Hulya; Boughattas, Wissal; Abid, Sami; Mascret, Nicolas; Kara, Feyza Meryem; Fadda, Daniela; Probst, MichelThe study examined the cross-cultural validity of the short form of the Physical Self-Inventory (PSI-S) among samples of adolescents speaking French, Dutch, Turkish, Italian, and Arab. A total of 4,867 adolescents (1,173 Belgian Flemish, 598 French, 1,222 Italian, 643 Turkish, 646 Kuwaiti, and 585 Tunisian) completed the original PSI-S version, and a revised version including a positively worded reformulation of the 3 negatively worded PSI-S items. The results supported the factor validity and reliability of revised PSI-S version across all cultural groups, and its superiority when compared to the original version. Compared with confirmatory factor analyses, relying on an exploratory structural equation modeling measurement model resulted in superior solution, and in more cleanly differentiated factors. PSI-S responses proved to be fully invariant across cultural groups, and presented no evidence of differential item functioning as a function of age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and sport involvement. However, the results revealed meaningful mean level differences as a function of gender, age, sport involvement, and BMI that were mostly consistent with the results from previous studies.Publication Metadata only The Physical Self in Motion: Within-Person Change and Associations of Change in Self-Esteem, Physical Self-Concept, and Physical Activity in Adolescent Girls(HUMAN KINETICS PUBL INC, 2014) AŞÇI, FEVZİYE HÜLYA; Lindwall, Magnus; Asci, Hulya; Crocker, PeterThe purpose of this study was to examine patterns of within-person change, and associations of change, in global self-esteem (GSE), physical self-perceptions (PSP), and physical activity in a sample of 705 Canadian adolescent girls over three measurements points and 24 months. The Physical Self-Perceptions Profile (PSPP) was used to measure GSE and PSP, and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) was used to assess physical activity. Latent growth curve models were used to analyze the data. All PSP variables except for body attractiveness demonstrated significant average decline, but also significant was the change in between-person heterogeneity. Change in GSE and PSP was moderately to strongly related on a between-person level and weakly to moderately associated on a within-person level. Change in physical activity was related to change in the majority of the PSP variables but not to change in GSE.
