Abstract
Filistin in Türk hakimiyetine girmesinden sonra deniz yoluyla yapılan ziyaretler kesilmese de, bölgedeki karışıklıklar nedeniyle Anadolu üzerinden kara yoluyla yapılan yolculuklar bitme noktasın a gelmişti. Bölge nin Müslüman hakimiyetinde olması, Hıristiyan dünyasında Filistin in Müslümanlardan kurtarılması kon u sunda dini bilincinin uyanmasına da sebep olmuştur.
In Christianity, the pilgrimage to the sites where Jesus was born and lived began in the very early stages. Alth ough in the beginning, there were some doubts - after all, this was the place where Jesus was crucified - in time, these doubts faded. After the Roman Empire legalized Christianity, interest in the sacred places grew. Initially, the Church Fathers did not much approve of this pilgrimage, but from the 5 th century on their attitude towards it changed. With the support of the Roman rulers and the motivation of the clergy, Palestine started receiving a large influx of visitors. After Palestine came under Musli m rule (AD 638), the strenous relation with the West slowed down the visits. Later, in the 8 th century the pilgrimage picked up pace again, as a result of the good relations between Caliph Harun al -Rashid and Charlemagne. After the 10 th century the number of Christian pilgrimages increased. On the one hand this was due to the growth of economic means in the West, the improvement of travel by land as well as by sea, a pilgrimage trend among the elite and the efforts of the Cluny Order; and on the other hand , an attempt of the Muslim world to overcome the economic adversity that struck the region with the appearance of regional emirates, with the income these ‗touristic visits would provide. Turkish rule of Palestine, although it did not hinder the pilgrimag e over sea, was cause to a near complete halt of the pilgrimage by land through Anatolia, due to the regional unrest there. However, the region being under Muslim control, instigated a religious awareness in the Christian world that Palestine should be lib erated from the Muslims.
