Publication Metadata only Preparation and drug release properties of lignin-starch biodegradable films(WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH, 2012) OGAN, AYŞE; Calgeris, Ilker; Cakmakci, Emrah; Ogan, Ayse; Kahraman, M. Vezir; Kayaman-Apohan, NilhanStarch is one of the most commonly available natural polymers which are obtained from agro-sources. It is renewable and abundant in nature. Unfortunately due to its poor mechanical properties and hygroscopic nature, there are some strong limitations to the development of starch-based products. Usually blends of starch are prepared and plasticized with glycerol to improve some of its properties. In this study, lignin was extracted from hazelnut shells and investigated as a potential additive for starch biofilms. The structural characterization of hazelnut lignin was performed by employing UV spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Lignin was blended with corn starch in different ratios to obtain biofilms. Mechanical and thermal properties of the biofilms were enhanced as the lignin amount was increased in the formulations. Water absorption tests were performed at pH 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0. The percent swelling values of the starch/lignin films increased as pH increased. Also, the biofilm exhibiting the best properties was chosen for the drug release studies. Biofilms showed a fast ciprofloxacin (CPF) release within an hour and then the drug release rate decreased. A pH dependent drug release mechanism was also observed according to KoshnerPeppas model. The drug release increased with a decrease in pH.Publication Metadata only Preparation and Characterization of Thermally Conductive Thermoplastic Polyurethane/h-BN Nanocomposites(WILEY, 2014) ÇAKMAKÇI, EMRAH; Cakmakci, Emrah; Kocyigit, Ciler; Cakir, Selma; Durmus, Ali; Kahraman, M. VezirPublication Open Access Thioether functional chain extender for thermoplastic polyurethanes(SPRINGER, 2015-06) ÇAKMAKÇI, EMRAH; Altintas, Zerrin; Cakmakci, Emrah; Kahraman, M. Vezir; Kayaman-Apohan, NilhanIn this study, a novel three functional chain extender (TATATRIOL) was synthesized from the reaction of 1,3,5-tri(prop-2-en-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4,6-trione (TATA) with 2-sulfanylethanol. Then new thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) were synthesized by a one-step bulk polymerization from the reaction of 1,1'-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (H12MDI), a poly(ethylene adipate) based polyester polyol and a chain extender. Butane-1,4-diol (BD) and the newly synthesized monomer, TATATRIOL, were used as chain extenders. The effects of TATATRIOL on the properties of the TPU were investigated and compared to those of the TPU prepared with BD. The TPUs which derived from the sulfur containing chain extender displayed lower modulus and high elongation at break values than the analogous TPUs derived from BD. Moreover sulfur containing TPUs exhibited higher thermal stability.Publication Metadata only Preparation and thermal properties of polyacrylonitrile/hexagonal boron nitride composites(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2013) ÇAKMAKÇI, EMRAH; Madakbas, Seyfullah; Cakmakci, Emrah; Kahraman, Memet VezirPolyacrylonitrile is a thermoplastic polymer with unique properties and it has several uses. However its flammability is a major drawback for certain applications. In this study it was aimed to prepare polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) composites with improved flame retardancy and thermal stability. Chemical structures of the composites were characterized by FTIR analysis. Thermal properties of these novel composites were analysed by TGA and DSC measurements. Glass transition temperatures and char yields increased with increasing h-BN percentage. Flame retardancy of the PAN composite materials improved with the addition of h-BN and the LOI value reached to 27% from 18%. Furthermore, the surface morphology of the composites was investigated by SEM analysis. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
