Ç.PurposeThe purpose of this study is to determine the mental health status and risk factors for the mental health of first-year university students on a health sciences campus. Design/methodology/approachThis is a descriptive study. The research was conducted with first-year students in the health sciences, dentistry and medical faculties of a state university (n = 770). The data were collected with a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Risk Behavior of Young Adults Survey, the Bergen Insomnia Scale, General Health Questionnaire-28 and the Mental Health Improvement Scale. Body mass index was calculated. FindingsAmong the students, 53.7% experienced feelings of hopelessness in the last year and 1% had attempted suicide. The percentage of students found to be at risk in terms of mental health was 41.9%; 39.4% reported that they suffered from insomnia. It was found that those who had been subjected to bullying, felt hopelessness, had suicidal thoughts, planned to commit suicide and students who experienced sleeping problems were more at risk in terms of psychological issues (p < 0.01). Insomnia (beta: 3.341) and smoking (beta: 2.226) were identified as the strongest risk factors for mental health in first-year health sciences students (p < 0.005). Practical implicationsThe results of the research offer an opportunity to get to know the characteristics of first-year university students who are at risk for mental health. It offers the opportunity to closely monitor and protect the mental health of students starting from the first grade. Originality/valueIn this study, it was determined that approximately half of the first-year university students were in the risk group in terms of mental health. Female gender, having a chronic illness, smoking a day or more in the past 30 days, not doing any physical activity, having a weak BMI, being bullied in the past 12 months, being cyberbullied in the past 12 months and having insomnia have been identified as risk factors that negatively affect mental health.Publication Metadata only Evaluation of the Consistency Between Clinical and Preclinical Observers in the Formation of the History Taking Skills of Fourth Year Medical Students of Marmara University(ORTADOGU AD PRES & PUBL CO, 2011) UZUNER, ARZU; Akman, Mehmet; Cifcili, Serap; Unalan, Pemra C.; Uzuner, Arzu; Kaya, Cigdem ApaydinObjective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the level of consistency between clinical and preclinical medical observers while evaluating the medical history taking skill of medical students. Material and Methods: Causal comparative survey model is used in this study. A total of 40 students were randomly selected from the fourth year medical students by using the random numbers chart. The Oral History Taking Evaluation Guideline (OHTEG) developed by the researchers and reconciled on in terms of language and context, was used for the evaluation process. The student and patient interviews were evaluated in the internal medicine, family practice and general surgery outpatient clinics by four different observer teams each consisting of one randomly selected preclinial and one clinical observers. Patients presenting for the first time and accepting to take part in the study were admitted to the interview room in the order of presentation. The duration of the interview between students and patients was previously set as 10 minutes. Results: Among the medical students taking part in the study, 17 (42.5%) were males. A weak but significant consistency was observed between the global evaluation points asssigned by the individual observers (k: 0.27, p= 0.001). A weak to good level of consistency was observed in the six subcontents of the Oral History Taking Evaluation Guideline (OHTEG), including the introduction, history of drug use, smoking habits and alcohol intake, family history, system query and the fluency of the interview (k: 0.24, 0.28, 0.53, 0.18, 0.38, 0.35, respectively; p< 0.05). Conclusion: A strong consistency was not observed between clinical and preclinical medical observers while evaluating the medical history taking skill of medical students. This suggests that the priorities of the clinical and preclinical medical observers are different from each other. The sharing of the expectations between clinical and preclinical medical observers starting from the planning stage of the training programs can provide standardization in the process of development of the oral history taking skill of the students.Publication Metadata only How culturally competent we are?
