The effectiveness of a nail-biting prevention program among primary school students
(WILEY, 2018) GÜR, KAMER; Guer, Kamer; Erol, Saime; Incir, Nursultan
Purpose: This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of a program called Do Not Bite Your Nails, Cut Your Nails, which is based on a health promotion model to change the nail-biting habit among primary school students. Design and methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using the pre- and post-test and interrupted time series design. The study sample included 299 students. Nurse observation form and nail follow-up chart were used to evaluate behavioral outcomes. This program was conducted under the guidance of school nurses and lasted 6 weeks. The data were analyzed using McNemar and Cochran Q tests. Results: The number of those who selected yes for I cut my nails this weekend and I didn't bite my nails today increased. However, the number of the students that selected yes for I pulled out my nails, I pulled out and ate, I pulled out my nail skin, My cuticle bled today, and My nails hurt today decreased significantly and statistically compared with pretest, first and second observation, and post-test (P < 0.001). The rate of the students with minimum one abnormal finger was 83.9% according to observations, and 6% following the intervention (P < 0.001). New insights were provided into the program to diminish nail-biting habit. Practice implications: The program significantly reduced the nail-biting rate among primary school students. The nurse that implement this program will be able to do a comprehensive evaluation of students' nail-biting habits, perform solution-focused interventions, and prevent advanced complications that might develop in connection to nail-biting. Thus, the effectiveness of nursing implementations will improve in the prevention of nail-biting habit, early diagnosis, and changing students' habits. Do Not Bite Your Nails, Cut Your Nails program can be applied again in different schools.

The Frequency of and Contributing Factors to the Psychological Abuse of Older People in Nursing Homes in Turkey
(MARMARA UNIV, INST HEALTH SCIENCES, 2020-05-02) GÜR, KAMER; Erol, Saime; Gur, Kamer; Hellac, Feyza; Canbay, Tugba
Objective: This study investigated the frequency of the psychological abuse of older people in nursing homes and contributing factors. Methods: The population for this methodological and descriptive study was 161 elderly individuals living in two nursing homes in Istanbul. The data were collected using Barthel's Index, the Standardized Mini Mental Test (SMMT) and the Elders' Psychological Abuse Scale (EPAS). The scale's reliability was tested using the Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20) and test-retest analysis. Its validity was tested using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and concurrent validity. The frequency of abuse is presented using numbers, percentages, and means. The relationship between the independent variables and abuse was evaluated using the t-test and Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis. Results: The participants' mean age was 73.5 years (42.2% were older than 80 years); 44.7% were female. The mean scores were 5.57 +/- 4.12 on the EPAS and 89.13 +/- 17.13 on Barthel's Index. The KR-20 reliability coefficient for the scale was 0.80. The test-retest reliability was 0.97; p=0.000, and the content validity index was 90%. Of the participants, 14.3% were exposed to psychological abuse. Individuals with high dependency and low levels of income, education and mental capacity were exposed to psychological abuse more frequently (p <0.05). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the originally English EPAS is reliable and valid.

The Family Management of Childhood Chronic Conditions: Measurement in a Turkish Sample
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC, 2019) ERGÜN, AYŞE; Ergun, Ayse; Sisman, Fatma Nevin; Erol, Saime; Gur, Kamer; Kolac, Nurcan; Kadioglu, Hasibe
Purpose: The principal aim of this study was to adapt the FaMM into the Turkish language and test its validity and reliability. Design and methods: Data were collected from a total of 395 parents of children with chronic disease. The FaMM was translated using the translation and back-translation method. The reliability analysis of the FaMM was performed using Cronbach alpha coefficients, item-total correlations and test-retest correlations. Construct validity for the scale was assessed with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Results: The overall content validity index was 95%, signifying that the FaMM has good content validity. The CFA of the Turkish version of the FaMM did not confirm the original factorial structure. The model of three subscales for the Turkish FaMM was validated using EFA. The values of >= 0.70 for the Cronbach alpha coefficient, >0.25 for the item-total correlations and >0.40 for the test-retest application correlations for 2 weeks were found to be acceptable levels for the instruments and its subscales. Conclusions: The FaMM was found to be valid, reliable and appropriate for Turkish culture and psychometric characteristics were satisfactory. Practice implications: The FaMM can be used in evaluating the management of illness in families with children with chronic disease. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

(2023-01-01) GÜR, KAMER; EROL, SAİME; ÇİFÇİLİ, SALİHA SERAP; ÇALIK, KEVSER BURCU; YILDIZ ÖZER, AYSEL; DEMİRBÜKEN, İLKŞAN; POLAT, MİNE GÜLDEN; APAYDIN KAYA, MEMNUNE ÇİĞDEM; GÜR K., EROL S., GÜNEŞ F. E., ÇİFÇİLİ S. S., ÇALIK K. B., YILDIZ ÖZER A., DEMİRBÜKEN İ., POLAT M. G., APAYDIN KAYA M. Ç.
ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the health behavior and health needs of medical and health sciences students in order to identify areas that need intervention. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 770 first-year university students. The data were collected with a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Eating Attitudes Test. Body mass index was calculated. Results: Although, only 12.7% of the students were overweight or obese, 25.6% of the students perceived themselves to be overweight or obese. The students said that in the last week, 20.9% had breakfast 1 or 3 times, 5.7% ate no fruits at all, and 11.6% ate no vegetables at all. 48.1% of the students did not engage in any physical activity, and 83.2% spent more than 2 hours inactively in front of a screen. It was observed that 22.3% were current smokers. A propensity for eating behaviors disorder was found in 9.0%. Drinking energyboosting sports drinks 1-6 times in the last week (β: 3.286), smoking (β: 1.875) and eating few vegetable dishes in the last week (β: 0.484) were identified as factors that could be associated with a “tendency for eating behavior disorder.” Conclusion: We can conclude that nutritional issues, negative body weight perception, use of tobacco, and sedentary lifestyle are the main intervention and counselling areas for our study group.
