    The effectiveness of a nail-biting prevention program among primary school students

    Purpose: This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of a program called Do Not Bite Your Nails, Cut Your Nails, which is based on a health promotion model to change the nail-biting habit among primary school students. Design and methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using the pre- and post-test and interrupted time series design. The study sample included 299 students. Nurse observation form and nail follow-up chart were used to evaluate behavioral outcomes. This program was conducted under the guidance of school nurses and lasted 6 weeks. The data were analyzed using McNemar and Cochran Q tests. Results: The number of those who selected yes for I cut my nails this weekend and I didn't bite my nails today increased. However, the number of the students that selected yes for I pulled out my nails, I pulled out and ate, I pulled out my nail skin, My cuticle bled today, and My nails hurt today decreased significantly and statistically compared with pretest, first and second observation, and post-test (P < 0.001). The rate of the students with minimum one abnormal finger was 83.9% according to observations, and 6% following the intervention (P < 0.001). New insights were provided into the program to diminish nail-biting habit. Practice implications: The program significantly reduced the nail-biting rate among primary school students. The nurse that implement this program will be able to do a comprehensive evaluation of students' nail-biting habits, perform solution-focused interventions, and prevent advanced complications that might develop in connection to nail-biting. Thus, the effectiveness of nursing implementations will improve in the prevention of nail-biting habit, early diagnosis, and changing students' habits. Do Not Bite Your Nails, Cut Your Nails program can be applied again in different schools.

    Achieving consensus on the undergraduate curriculum of public health nursing in Turkey

    ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to construct a consensus on the undergraduate learning objectives and topics for public health nursing (PHN) in Turkey. DesignA three-round e-mail-based Delphi study was conducted between May and July 2015 with a national sample. SampleNinety-one academics from 54 universities were invited as experts to participate by e-mail. Fifty-nine academics from 43 universities participated in the study. MeasurementsData were analyzed by computing the median, quartiles one and three, and the interquartile range for each learning outcome and topic. Consensus was considered as less than the interquartile range of 1.2. ResultsExperts who participated in the study added 70 learning outcomes, eight main topics, and 278 sub-topics during the first round. Round I generated 170 learning outcomes, 28 main topics, and 385 sub-topics. At the end of Round II, consensus was reached on 126 learning outcomes, 22 main topics and 168 sub-topics. At the end of Round III, consensus was achieved for 126 learning outcomes, 22 main topics, and 169 sub-topics. ConclusionThe learning outcomes and topics that were decided upon through a consensus process will contribute to the standardization and development of PHN education.

    The Family Management of Childhood Chronic Conditions: Measurement in a Turkish Sample

    Purpose: The principal aim of this study was to adapt the FaMM into the Turkish language and test its validity and reliability. Design and methods: Data were collected from a total of 395 parents of children with chronic disease. The FaMM was translated using the translation and back-translation method. The reliability analysis of the FaMM was performed using Cronbach alpha coefficients, item-total correlations and test-retest correlations. Construct validity for the scale was assessed with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Results: The overall content validity index was 95%, signifying that the FaMM has good content validity. The CFA of the Turkish version of the FaMM did not confirm the original factorial structure. The model of three subscales for the Turkish FaMM was validated using EFA. The values of >= 0.70 for the Cronbach alpha coefficient, >0.25 for the item-total correlations and >0.40 for the test-retest application correlations for 2 weeks were found to be acceptable levels for the instruments and its subscales. Conclusions: The FaMM was found to be valid, reliable and appropriate for Turkish culture and psychometric characteristics were satisfactory. Practice implications: The FaMM can be used in evaluating the management of illness in families with children with chronic disease. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Assessing the effect of school bullying prevention programs on reducing bullying

    This study was conducted for the purpose of assessing the effects on reducing bullying of a school bullying prevention program (BPP). A pre-test/post-test and control group, semi-experimental design was used for the research. The universe and sampling for the study comprised 583 pupils, ages 12-15, enrolled in two elementary schools in Istanbul. The BPP was prepared in accordance with the Behavioral-Ecological Model (BEM) and the Neuman Systems Model (NSM) and it encompassed faculty members, families and students. In the post-test, the mean scores of the study group in all of the sub-scales of the Peer Victimization Scale (PVS) and in the threatening/intimidating sub-scale of the Peer Bullying Behavior Scale (PBBS) were found to be significantly lower than those of the control group (p < .05). It was concluded that the BPP organized in line with the BEM and the NSM was effective in reducing bullying and could be used in nursing practices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Huzurevinde Yaşayan Yaşlı Bireylerin Düşme Korkusunu Azaltmada Güvenli Hareket ve Yürüme Programının Etkisi

    Amaç: Bu çalışma, huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlı bireylerin düşme korkusunu azaltmada “Güvenli Hareket veYürüme Programının” etkisini göstermek amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma; ön test-son testkontrol gruplu yarı deneysel tasarım ile Kasım 2012-Nisan 2013 tarihleri arasında Aile Sosyal Politikalar Bakanlığıİstanbul İl Müdürlüğüne bağlı bir huzurevinde yaşayan 73 yaşlı ile gerçekleştirildi. Yaşlılara düşme, düşmekorkusu, güvenli hareket davranışları, fiziksel aktivite ve yürüyüşü artırmaya yönelik altı haftalık girişim programıuygulandı. Veri toplama aracı olarak, Yaşlı Bilgi Formu, Tinetti Düşmenin Etkisi Ölçeği (TDEÖ), Yaşlılar İçinDüşme Davranışları Ölçeği (YİDDÖ) ve Tinetti Denge ve Yürüme Değerlendirmesi (TDYD) formları kullanıldı.Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde Student t test, Mann-Whitney U test, varyans analizi, Bonferroni test, Friedmantest ve Wilcoxon Signed Rank test kullanıldı. Bulgular: Çalışmanın sonucunda deney grubundaki yaşlıların TinettiDüşmenin Etkisi Ölçeği toplam puanı, YİDDÖ toplam puanı ile Bilişsel Uyum, Hareketlilik, Sakınma,Farkındalık, Pratiklik, Seviye Değişikliği, Telefona Yetişme ve Dikkatlilik alt boyut puanları kontrol grubundanyüksek bulundu. Sonuç: “Güvenli Hareket ve Yürüme Programının” huzurevlerinde yaygınlaştırılması önerilir.

    Hopelessness and social comparison in Turkish adolescent with visual impairment

    The purpose of this study was to determine visually impaired adolescents' level of hopelessness and how they perceive of themselves socially compared to other individuals. Another purpose of this study was to look for relationships between hopelessness and social comparison in adolescents with visual impairment. The research population was comprised of 130 students at a secondary school for the visually impaired in Istanbul, Turkey. Our study demonstrated a weak relationship between social comparison and hopelessness (r=0.46, P < 0.000). The mean hopelessness score for the adolescents with visual impairment was 4.59 +/- 3.12 (girls: 4.23 +/- 3.10; boys: 4.83 +/- 3.11) and social comparison score was 87.50 +/- 11.19 (girls: 88.67 +/- 11.62; boys: 86.60 +/- 10.85). Hopelessness and social comparison were not affected by being blind from birth compared to later or from being a full-time boarding student compared to being a day student. The hopeless (Beck Hopelessness Scale score 9) adolescents' social comparison scores were found lower than hopeful ones' scores (P < 000). Factors affecting hopelessness and social comparison were feelings about their father, teacher and school.

    The effect of peer bullying education on adolescents' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors towards bullying

    The study was of quasi-experimental design. It was conducted to determine the effect of peer bullying education given to adolescents on their knowledge, attitude and behaviors. Adolescents between 12-15 years of age who are all studying at a primary school, 141 adolescent were included in training. The 26 questions were asked to adolescents that measure knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. Training lasted for 5 weeks and meeting was held with students one hour each week. Increasing in knowledge, attitude and behaviour scores of adolescents before and after education were found statistically significant. When viewed in scores of knowledge between the classes, knowledge score was statistically increased in all grades. However, in 6th grades scores were lower compared to the other classes.     The Psychometric Features of the Turkish Version of the Ageism Survey and the Frequency of Ageism

    Background: This study was conducted to adapt the ageism survey to the Turkish language and culture and to determine the frequency of occurrence of ageism. Methods: The study population consisted of 236 individuals aged 50-95 years. The cultural adaptation of the ageism survey was carried out through the method of translation/back-translation and the validity of the instrument was tested for content and construct validity; its reliability was tested by internal consistency analysis. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 64.44 +/- 9.57. The content validity index for the ageism survey was found to be 0.89 and Cronbach a value was 0.86. Item-total correlation values for all of the items were over 0.31. Of the participants, 82.5% reported being confronted with some kind of discriminatory behavior at least once. Conclusion: It was established that the ageism survey is appropriate to the Turkish language and culture and that it is a valid and reliable instrument.
