Developing a Diabetes Knowledge Scale for Adults and its Psychometric Properties
    (2022-09-01) EROL, SAİME; Yavuz K. E. , EROL S.
Objective: This study was conducted to develop and test the psychometric properties of a \"Diabetes Knowledge Scale for Adults.\"Methods: The sample for this research of methodological design consisted of 500 individuals, ages 18-90, who had presented at a state hospital in Istanbul during the period October 2018-April 2019 with or without a diagnosis of diabetes. Data for the study were collected with a \"Sociodemographic Characteristics Descriptive Questionnaire\" and the \"Diabetes Knowledge Scale for Adults (DKSA).\" The validity of the scale was evaluated with the content validity index and construct validity testing (exploratory, confirmatory factor analyses). Its reliability was assessed with KR-20 internal consistency analysis, item-total correlation testing, the item discrimination, item difficulty indexes, and test-retest analysis. Results: The content validity index for the 28-item scale was found to be 0.92. The exploratory factor analysis revealed five subscales that explained 62.15% of scale variance. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis, GFI= 0.88 CFI= 0.93, AGFI= 0.86, SRMR= 0.01 and chi 2/ df = 2.43, confirmed a good and acceptable level of goodness of fit for the scale. The scale\"s KR-20 reliability coefficient was 0.94, item-total correlations were above .45 and the correlation between the test-retests administered two weeks apart was found to be r=0.99Conclusion: DKSA is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to determine the knowledge level of between the ages of 18-90 adults about diabetes.

Social participation is important in terms of active aging and quality of life during old age. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the social participation of older adults in rural and urban areas in Turkey. Related factors were similarly identified. The sample comprised 1,224 people over the age of 60, with a mean of 69.78 ± 7.48 years. Among the participants, 61.4% live in urban areas. The data were collected in family health centers through face-to-face interview and the Interview Form, Social Participation Assessment Form, and Social Participation Dimension of the Turkish Version of the Aging Module of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) Scale. The scores obtained from the social participation dimension of the scale among the elderly in urban areas were higher than those obtained among the elderly in rural areas (p =.002). In addition, older adults in the urban areas who talked on the phone several times a month (p =.025), went to concerts, theater/cinema, museum/exhibition, various visual/musical shows (p =.046), and engaged in gardening (p =.032) obtained higher scores in the social participation dimension than the other participants. Health care professionals should take an advocacy role in building relationships with policy makers and create suitable socialization opportunities for older adults in urban and rural areas.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to determine the mental health status and risk factors for the mental health of first-year university students on a health sciences campus. Design/methodology/approachThis is a descriptive study. The research was conducted with first-year students in the health sciences, dentistry and medical faculties of a state university (n = 770). The data were collected with a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Risk Behavior of Young Adults Survey, the Bergen Insomnia Scale, General Health Questionnaire-28 and the Mental Health Improvement Scale. Body mass index was calculated. FindingsAmong the students, 53.7% experienced feelings of hopelessness in the last year and 1% had attempted suicide. The percentage of students found to be at risk in terms of mental health was 41.9%; 39.4% reported that they suffered from insomnia. It was found that those who had been subjected to bullying, felt hopelessness, had suicidal thoughts, planned to commit suicide and students who experienced sleeping problems were more at risk in terms of psychological issues (p < 0.01). Insomnia (beta: 3.341) and smoking (beta: 2.226) were identified as the strongest risk factors for mental health in first-year health sciences students (p < 0.005). Practical implicationsThe results of the research offer an opportunity to get to know the characteristics of first-year university students who are at risk for mental health. It offers the opportunity to closely monitor and protect the mental health of students starting from the first grade. Originality/valueIn this study, it was determined that approximately half of the first-year university students were in the risk group in terms of mental health. Female gender, having a chronic illness, smoking a day or more in the past 30 days, not doing any physical activity, having a weak BMI, being bullied in the past 12 months, being cyberbullied in the past 12 months and having insomnia have been identified as risk factors that negatively affect mental health.
