    Chemical composition of endemic Stachys subnuda Montbret & Aucher ex Benth. essential oil and its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities

    The essential oil of aerial parts of Stachys subnuda Montbret & Aucher ex Benth (S. subnuda) was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry (MS). Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by lipoxygenase inhibition assay. The antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. Sixty-two constituents, comprising 97.1% of the total essential oil composition, were identified. Phytol (25.2%), beta-caryophyllene (11.2%), germacrene D (6.9%), and hexadecanoic acid (6.9%) were the major compounds of aerial part essential oils of S. subnuda. The essential oil showed significant radical scavenging activity with 50% inhibition (IC50) values of 0.124 and 0.204 mg/mL for ABTS and DPPH radicals, respectively. The essential oil exhibited moderate anti-inflammatory activity with an IC50 value of 0.419 mg/mL. The results indicated that S. subnuda essential oil had good anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Also, this is first study on chemical composition, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of S. subnuda essential oil.

    Flavonoids and antioxidant activity of Rosa agrestis leaves

    In this work we report the isolation and characterisation of seven flavonoids, the levels of total phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins, and the antioxidant activity of the leaf extract of Rosa agrestis Savi (Rosaceae). The results showed that the R. agrestis leaf extract exhibited significant antioxidative activity as measured by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (EC50 = 47.4 mu g mL-1), inhibited both -carotene bleaching and deoxyribose degradation, quenched a chemically generated superoxide anion in vitro and showed high ferrous ion chelating activity. Reactivity towards 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical cation and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values were equivalent to 2.30 mM L-1 Trolox, the water soluble -tocopherol analogue, and 1.91 mM L-1 Fe2+, respectively. The high antioxidant activity of the extract appeared to be attributed to its high content of total phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. The flavonoids isolated from R. agrestis leaves were diosmetin, kaempherol, quercetin, kaempherol 3-glucoside (astragalin), quercetin 3-rhamnoside (quercitrin), quercetin 3-xyloside and quercetin 3-galactoside (hyperoside). Diosmetin (5,7,3'-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavone) was isolated for the first time from Rosa species.

    THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF MYRTUS COMMUNIS SUBSP COMMUNIS EXTRACT AGAINST ACETIC ACID-INDUCED COLONIC INFLAMMATION IN RATS

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract from leaves of Myrtus communis subsp. communis (MC) on acetic acid (AA)-induced ulcerative colitis in rats. On the fourth day of colitis induction, all rats were decapitated. Colitis was assessed by macroscopic and microscopic scores and by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, luminol, lucigenin, nitric oxid and peroxynitrite chemiluminescence (CL). Colitis caused significant increases in the colonic MDA levels, MPO activity, CL values, macroscopic and microscopic damage scores along with significant decrease in tissue GSH level. However, treatment with MC extract reversed all these biochemical indices, as well as histopathological alterations induced by AA with the protective effects being similar to that of sulphasalazine treatment. The study showed that MC extract could alleviate colitis in rats and can be considered an alternative therapeutic approach for management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

    Essential oil composition of different parts of Tanacetum cilicicum (Boiss.) Grierson

    The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the chemical composition of essential oils obtained by Clevenger-type apparatus from capitula (TCC) and aerial parts including leaves and stems (TCA) of Tanacetum cilicicum (Boiss.) Grierson from Turkey. TCC and TCA essential oils were separately analysed by GC-FID and GC/MS. Forty and thirty-two compounds were identified, representing 99% and 94.4% of the oils of TCC and TCA essential oils, respectively. The main constituents of the oil of the TCC were camphor (28.8%), (E)-nerolidol (16.9%), trans-chrysanthenyl acetate (12.8%) and 1,8-cineole (8.9%), whereas the oil from TCA comprised mainly trans-chrysanthenyl acetate (22.2%), borneol (19.4%), camphor (11.2%), 1,8-cineole (10.2%) and (E)-nerolidol (9.2%). The results showed that TCC and TCA essential oils were rich in oxygenated monoterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. This study is the first to study the essential oil composition of different parts of Tanacetum cilicicum separately. Also, to the our best of our knowledge, (E)-nerolidol was found in the Tanacetum species as the major compound for the first time. © 2020, Badebio Biotechnololgy Ltd. All rights reserved.

    From the aerial parts of Delphinium buschianum GROSSH., collected in Turkey, a new diterpenoid alkaloid 1, named budelphine, was isolated along with the known diterpenoid alkaloids karakoline (2), 18-hydroxy-14-O-methylgadesine (3), delsoline (4), lapaconidine (5), columbianine (6), 14-benzoylneoline (7), and hetisine (9). ne structure of 1 was established on the basis of H-1-, C-13-, DEPT, H-1,H-1-COSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC NMR studies.

    Effects of Myrtus communis extract treatment in bile duct ligated rats

    Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the antifibrotic and antioxidant effects of Myrtus communis subsp. communis (MC) extract against liver injury and fibrosis occurring in rats with biliary obstruction. Materials and methods: The rats were randomized into four groups (n = 8). Control group (C), MC-administrated group (MC), the bile duct ligation (BDL), and BDL + MC groups. MC was administered at a dose of 50 mg/kg a day orally for 28 days. In blood samples, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase levels, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-1 beta measurement were measured. Oxidative injury was examined by measuring luminol and lucigenin chemiluminescence, malondialdehyde and glutathione levels, superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase activities. Transforming growth factor-beta and hydroxyproline levels were measured for analyzing fibrosis. The hepatic injury was also analyzed microscopically. Results: Plasma total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-1 beta levels were found significantly high in the BDL group, while these values significantly decreased in the BDL group treated with MC. On the other hand, the glutathione and superoxide dismutase values significantly decreased in the BDL group compared to the control group but increased markedly in BDL + MC group compared to the BDL group. Malondialdehyde levels, myeloperoxidase activity, tissue luminol, lucigenin, transforming growth factor-beta, and hydroxyproline levels when compared with the control group increased dramatically in the BDL group and reduced the MC + BDL group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that MC protects the liver tissues against oxidative damage following BDL via its radical scavenging and antioxidant activities, which appear to involve the inhibition of tissue neutrophil infiltration.
