    (2022-05-19) ÇELİK, ZEHRA MARGOT; SABUNCULAR, GÜLEREN; AKTAÇ, ŞULE; ÇELİK Z. M., AKTAÇ Ş., SABUNCULAR G., Dirican T., Duman Ş., Güleç Y., Demir A. H.
Nutrition has a big impact on physical and mental development through all life stages, especially in childhood. Nutrition habits during childhood can impact later life preferences and health status, (1) and school-based nutrition interventions are very important to build healthy lifestyle in early life. (2) Moreover, schools have a unique environment for the implementation and evaluation of these interventions. Also, a body of evidence shows balanced nutrition can contribute student’s academic performance. (3) School-aged children’s food preferences and nutrition habits can be impacted by peers, other students, teachers, family members and media. School based nutrition education programmes can help to build healthy eating habits and active life style with education materials which cover age-related activities and games. The Balanced Nutrition Education Programme was established in 2011 by the Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation in cooperation with Ministry of National Education, in Turkey. Education materials of Balanced Nutrition Project has developed and adapted to Turkish from British Nutrition Foundation’s Food a Fact of Life Project. In 2011 programme was performed in 2nd and 4th grade students, afterwards with the success of program, students from preschool up to 4th grade were involved so far. Balanced Nutrition Programme has reached nearly 6 million individuals via students, teachers and families. To evaluate the impact of the Balanced Nutrition Education Programme, for first a research has conducted in 2014. (4) According to this research, programme improved nutrition and physical activity status of children and the second research to evaluate the impact of the project is runned.

Relationship between nutrition and sleep quality, focusing on the melatonin biosynthesis
(SPRINGER JAPAN KK, 2020) SABUNCULAR, GÜLEREN; Sanlier, Nevin; Sabuncular, Gueleren
Sleep duration and quality are associated with many diseases. Evaluating the relationship between nutrient intake and sleep quality is important, because dietary factors play an important role in sleep quality. Short sleep duration which is associated with both metabolic disorders, obesity and, an irregular sleep pattern are thought to be related to an unhealthy diet. The recent literature has been reviewed using EMBASE, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases. The effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on sleep parameters have been demonstrated. Carbohydrates and fats can regulate sleep quality by affecting the duration of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. For proteins, tryptophan is the most promising amino acid for sleep-promoting food, since it is the precursor of melatonin and serotonin playing a role in improving sleep quality of humans. It is a common finding that those who have short sleep duration take in more energy from fat and carbohydrate. However, to what extent diet can affect sleep still remains unclear. This present review discusses the potential role of nutrition in regulating sleep quality and offers suggestions for feasible future studies. Some macro and micronutrients of the diet were found correlated with sleep duration and quality. Mechanisms mediating the relationship between sleep duration and dietary intake are multi-factorial. Therefore, future studies will benefit from assessing sleep duration/quality and dietary intake.

Evaluation of malnutrition risk of inpatients in a research and training hospital: A cross-sectional study
(ELSEVIER, 2021) İSLAMOĞLU, AYŞE HÜMEYRA; Celik, Zehra Margot; Islamoglu, Ayse Humeyra; Sabuncular, Guleren; Toprak, Hatice Selcen; Gunes, Fatma Esra
Background & aims: Malnutrition is one of the most important factors affecting the prognosis of inpatients. The aim of this study is to determine the malnutrition risk of hospitalized patients and to examine the relationship between the presence of malnutrition and other parameters. Methods: The study included 162 inpatients over the age of 25 who were staying in the hospital's internal medicine service for 7 days or more and who volunteered to participate in the study. A demographic-information questionnaire, consisting of 5 sections, a 24-h food recall record, NRS-2002, NRI and Beck Depression Inventory was given to patients during bedside interviews. After obtaining the necessary permission, the anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameter values of the patients were taken from their files. All statistical analyzes were performed by researchers with the SPSS package program. Results: Of 162 patients (48.8% female, 51.2% male), 24.7% were at risk for malnutrition according to NRS-2002 and 66.7% of the patients were not depressive, based on the Beck Depression Inventory scale. The malnutrition risk was higher (60.0%) in patients who had been hospitalized for more than 15 days (p = 0.010). The majority of those with malnutrition had no problems preventing them from eating (32.5%), were found to be not depressive (52.5%) and were in the normal range of body mass index (57.5%) (p = 0.002, p = 0.034, p = 0.001; respectively). Nutrient intake was lower in patients with a higher malnutrition risk, but the difference was insignificant (p > 0.05). Albumin levels (p = 0.028) and total protein levels (p = 0.015) were significantly lower in patients who were at risk of malnutrition. While overweight patients showed higher levels of serum albumin (p < 0.001), CRP levels were found to be lower in overweight patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: It was found that the majority of patients with malnutrition were in the normal range for BMI. Nutritional intake and biochemical parameters should be followed closely in patients who are at risk of malnutrition. Depression can be a cause for insufficient nutrition and should be evaluated, particularly in patients whose length of hospital stay is greater than 7 days.
