Publication Metadata only Effects of Antenatal Education Program on Postpartum Functional Status and Depression(MARMARA UNIV, INST HEALTH SCIENCES, 2017) CAN GÜRKAN, ÖZLEM; Gurkan, Ozlem Can; Eksi, ZubeydeObjective: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of antenatal education on the functional status and depression in women who were in the 6th postpartum week and in the 6th postpartum month. Methods: The nonrandomized, post-test-control group design was used. The study was conducted on pregnant women who applied to the prenatal center of a hospital in Istanbul. The participants in the education group attended the antenatal education program, whereas those in the control group received routine antenatal care. The study was completed with 65 participants (education group=31 and control group=34). Data collection was performed using the Demographic Questionnaire, the 6th Week Assessment Form, the Inventory of Functional Status after Childbirth (IFSAC), and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference in terms of both the EPDS scores and IFSAC scores between the groups at both the 6th week and the 6th month (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was found that antenatal training may not be effective in decreasing postpartum depression and in improving the postpartum functional status.Publication Metadata only Value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in predicting left ventricular recovery in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy(SPRINGER WIEN, 2017) CAN GÜRKAN, ÖZLEM; Gurkan, Ufuk; Akgoz, Haldun; Aksoy, Sukru; Gurkan, Ozlem Can; Osken, Altug; Dayi, Sennur Unal; Oz, Dilaver; Haci, RecepThe aim of this study was to assess the value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in predicting left ventricular (LV) recovery in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). Patients with PPCM (n = 40), who were admitted to our tertiary reference hospital between 2007 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were followed-up for at least 12 months after the diagnosis. All patients had standard echocardiographic examination at baseline and the last follow-up visit. Recovery of LV function was defined as the presence of LV ejection fraction (EF) > 45%. Data on blood parameters were also collected at baseline. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to assess the significant predictive variables for persistent LV systolic dysfunction. Of the patients 21 (52.5%) did not recover LV function at the last follow-up visit (nonrecovery group), while 19 of the patients (47.5%) exhibited LV recovery (recovery group). The LV EF and fractional shortening (FS) were significantly lower in the nonrecovery group. The baseline LV end-diastolic diameter, LV end-systolic diameter (LVESD) and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure were significantly increased in the nonrecovery group. The NLR, CaEuroreactive protein and troponin levels were significantly higher in the nonrecovery group. In multivariate logistic regression analysis only NLR and LVESD were identified as independent predictors of persistent LV systolic dysfunction in patients with PPCM (p = 0.020 and p = 0.009 respectively). Elevated NLR and increased LVESD were independent prognostic factors in predicting persistent LV dysfunction in patients with PPCM. The NLR might assist in identifying high risk patients with PPCM.Publication Open Access Evaluation of Perinatology Nursing Certificate Program(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2012) POTUR, DİLEK; Komurcu, Nuran; Demirci, Nurdan; Yildiz, Hatice; Eksi, Zubeyde; Gurkan, Ozlem Can; Potur, Dilek Coskuner; Sayin, Sena Dilek; Cosar, Fatma; Durmaz, Aysegul; Gun, Cigdem; Uzunboylu, HDue to reasons connected with pregnancy and labour, each year approximately 600,000 women (lie in the world without having any other health problems. Reducing the number of mother and baby deaths is among the objectives of the Ministry of Health in Turkey. To achieve the desired goals, it is necessary to maintain perinatal services without any problems, to standardize care and to provide patient satisfaction. In this issue, health professionals, especially nurses and midwives play an important role. For this reason, thanks to the cooperation of Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Health with Marmara University Faculty of Medical Sciences Nursing School Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, training was planned to educate nurses and midwives working in the field of Perinatology, who have an important role in woman health. Objective: The training aims to educate the nurses and midwives who work in the perinatal field, in the importance of women's health in order to make them more competent in the service they provide. Material and Method: A prospective intervention was planned and implemented as a study. A total of 129 midwives and nurses who work in the perinatology units of hospitals in Istanbul that are affiliated to the Ministry of Health, and who completed the Perfriatology Nursing Certificate Program, including 80 hours theoretical and 80 hours clinical practice, constituted the sample of this study. The study was implemented six times between April 2009 and November 2010, and in each program, 20-25 midwives/nurses received training. Data was collected via a questionnaire, a theoretical and practical evaluation form, a post-education three months evaluation form, and preliminary testing before and final testing after the training.Findings: It was determined that the average age of the participants was 32.10 +/- 5.92 and their average work duration was 11.23 +/- 7.31. While the theoretical training average preliminary test score was 62.16 +/- 11.60, the final test score average was 89.35 +/- 5.26. In the third month following the training, 43% and 28.8% of the midwives/nurses stated that they observed a development in their level of knowledge and skills respectively. Also, 92.2% of them indicated that the care they provide improved and 84.6% stated that patient satisfaction was affected in a positive way. Result: It was confirmed that training programs devoted to the field of expertise after graduation have a positive effect on the knowledge and skills of employees and on the service they provide.Publication Open Access The effect of a domestic violence course on nursing students' recognition of violence symptoms against women and their attitudes toward violence(KARE PUBL, 2019) CAN GÜRKAN, ÖZLEM; Gurkan, Ozlem CanPublication Open Access Nursing Students' Tendency To Aggression and Relevant Factors(KARE PUBL, 2016) CAN GÜRKAN, ÖZLEM; Can Gurkan, OzlemObjectives: The objective is to evaluate tendencies to aggression among nursing students and to analyze the risk factors that may increase the aggression. Methods: The population of our descriptive and cross-sectional study consists of 350 students studying at the department of nursing of a university in Istanbul. Sampling includes 236 students who are representative of the population, are 18 years or older, and were selected with the basic random sampling method. All volunteered to participate in the study. The data were obtained using the questionnaire form and the Aggression Scale, and the self-rating method was used to obtain data. Statistical data analysis was performed using chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test and logistic regression analysis. Results: The aggression scores of the males whose mothers were exposed to physical violence by their fathers, who were exposed to physical violence by their mothers and fathers, and who used physical violence were found statistically more significant. As a result of the logistic regression analysis, being exposed to physical violence by the mother, using physical violence, being a male, having a father who uses physical violence against the mother, mother's and father's educational status of primary school and having two or more siblings are specified as certain risk factors for the high tendency to aggression. Conclusion: Considering the outcomes of the study, we recommend that education programs be prepared in order to evaluate nursing students in terms of these risk factors, and for nursing students who display a high tendency toward aggression.Publication Metadata only The effect of a peer education program on combating violence against women: A randomized controlled study(CHURCHILL LIVINGSTONE, 2017) CAN GÜRKAN, ÖZLEM; Gurkan, Ozlern C.; Komurcu, NuranBackground: Student nurses in Turkey need to be exposed to appropriate undergraduate training if they are to acquire the required knowledge, attitudes and skills that will help them to fight the issue of violence against women (VAW). Objectives: The aim of this research study was to assess the effect of a peer education program about combating VAW on the knowledge, attitudes and skills of nursing students. Design: The study was designed as a randomized controlled trial. Settings: The participants in the intervention group received peer education on combating VAW. Participants: 136 nursing students (intervention group: n = 63, control group: n = 73) were included in the study. Results: Participants in both the intervention and control groups were assessed at pre-training and at two months post-training. Pre-training and post-training knowledge and attitudes were significantly different in the intervention group (p < 0.001). Moreover, the intervention group displayed a statistically significant difference in their ability to explain the correct interventions in a case study about VAW (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results indicate that peer education should be used as a part of undergraduate nursing education on VAW.
