İBS Hastalarının Beslenme Durumları, Yaşam Kalitesi ve Algılanan Stresleri Arasındaki İlişkinin Belirlenmesi
    (2022-05-19) ÇELİK, ZEHRA MARGOT; SABUNCULAR, GÜLEREN; AKTAÇ, ŞULE; ÇELİK Z. M., AKTAÇ Ş., SABUNCULAR G., Dirican T., Duman Ş., Güleç Y., Demir A. H.
Nutrition has a big impact on physical and mental development through all life stages, especially in childhood. Nutrition habits during childhood can impact later life preferences and health status, (1) and school-based nutrition interventions are very important to build healthy lifestyle in early life. (2) Moreover, schools have a unique environment for the implementation and evaluation of these interventions. Also, a body of evidence shows balanced nutrition can contribute student’s academic performance. Relationship between nutrition and sleep quality, focusing on the melatonin biosynthesis
(SPRINGER JAPAN KK, 2020) SABUNCULAR, GÜLEREN; Sanlier, Nevin; Sabuncular, Gueleren
Sleep duration and quality are associated with many diseases. Evaluating the relationship between nutrient intake and sleep quality is important, because dietary factors play an important role in sleep quality. Short sleep duration which is associated with both metabolic disorders, obesity and, an irregular sleep pattern are thought to be related to an unhealthy diet. The recent literature has been reviewed using EMBASE, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases. The effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on sleep parameters have been demonstrated. Carbohydrates and fats can regulate sleep quality by affecting the duration of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. For proteins, tryptophan is the most promising amino acid for sleep-promoting food, since it is the precursor of melatonin and serotonin playing a role in improving sleep quality of humans. It is a common finding that those who have short sleep duration take in more energy from fat and carbohydrate. However, to what extent diet can affect sleep still remains unclear. This present review discusses the potential role of nutrition in regulating sleep quality and offers suggestions for feasible future studies. Some macro and micronutrients of the diet were found correlated with sleep duration and quality. Mechanisms mediating the relationship between sleep duration and dietary intake are multi-factorial. Therefore, future studies will benefit from assessing sleep duration/quality and dietary intake.

Food related behaviors and sleep quality in university students: a descriptive study
(2023-09-01) İSLAMOĞLU, AYŞE HÜMEYRA; SABUNCULAR, GÜLEREN; İSLAMOĞLU A. H., SABUNCULAR G.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between food addiction, night eating status and sleep quality in students studying at different faculties or departments of various universities in Turkey. Methods: A total of 1044 students from 11 different departments/faculties were included. Night Eating Questionnaire, Yale Food Addiction Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale were applied to the students. Also, the dietary habits (main meal and snack consumptions, the meal they skipped and the reasons, duration of meals, consumption of tea and coffee etc.) of the students were questioned. Results: Significant relationships were found between BMIs, faculties/departments, use of antidepressants, skipping breakfast status and tea/coffee consumption of students. Moreover, there were significant differences between both food addiction status (p<0.001), night eating syndrome (p<0.001) and sleep quality. Students with poor sleep quality had more frequent night eating behavior and food selectivity. Conclusion: These findings suggest that for managing students’ eating problems like night eating and food addiction, their sleep quality should be improved, and vice versa.
