Investigation of physical activity levels by gender and residential areas: a case study on students in Akdeniz University
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2012) PINAR, SALİH; Ozdol, Yeliz; Ozer, M. Kamil; Pinar, Salih; Cetin, Emel; Baskan, GA; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S; Ozcan, D
Problem Statement: The promotion of a healthy lifestyle is the main goal of physical education in many countries. However, very little is known about the relationship between different residential areas and physical activity patterns among young people. Purpose of Study: To compare the physical activity levels (PAL) of university student in accordance with gender (male, n=250; female, n=200) and residential areas (in campus; n=196 and out of campus; n=254). Methods: This study included a total of 450 voluntary healthy subjects (21.04 +/- 1.61 years old) from two different residential areas. PAL's of students were evaluated by using the long form International Physical Activity Questionnaires. BMI was computed as kg/m(2). Data from the questionnaires was collected in a suitable relational database and analyzed with statistical software. The independent-samples t test was applied to understand differences in Physical Activity (PA) levels in terms of genders and also their residential areas. Results: Total PAs (MET min./week) of male students were higher than female counterparts (p<.01). On the other hand, PA at home or in garden domains of female students were higher than male counterparts (p<.05). It was observed that male students walk more and performed more moderate activities (MPA) than female counterparts (p<.01). When their residential areas were taken into consideration, students living in their own house had higher total PA (MET min./week) and higher MPA than students living in dormitory (p<.01). Conclusion: This study showed that PAL is higher for male students than female counterparts as indicated in the current literature. On the other hand, living far distant from campus played important role in having higher PAL in this study. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. DIFFERENT RECOVERY METHODS AND MUSCLE PERFORMANCE AFTER EXHAUSTING EXERCISE: COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF ELECTRICAL MUSCLE STIMULATION AND MASSAGE
    (INST SPORT, 2012) ÇOTUK, HASAN BİROL; Pinar, S.; Kaya, F.; Bicer, B.; Erzeybek, M. S.; Cotuk, H. B.
In this study we assessed the influence of the three different recovery interventions massage (MSG), electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), and passive rest (PR) on lactate disappearance and muscle recovery after exhausting exercise bouts. Twelve healthy male sport students participated in the study. They attended the laboratory on five test days. After measurement of (V) over dotO(2)max and a baseline Wingate test (WG(b)), the three recovery interventions were tested in random counterbalanced order. High intensity exercise, which consisted of six exhausting exercise bouts (interspersed with active recovery), was followed by MSG, EMS or PR application (24 minutes); then the final Wingate test (WG(f)) was performed. Lactate, heart rate, peak and mean power, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and total quality of recovery (TQR) were recorded. In WG(f) mean power was significantly higher than in WG(b) for all three recovery modalities (MSG 6.29%, EMS 5.33%, PR 4.84% increase, p<0.05), but no significant differences in mean and peak power were observed between the three recovery modes (p>0.05). The heart rate response and the changes in blood lactate concentration were identical in all three interventions during the entire protocol (p=0.817, p=0.493, respectively). RPE and TQR scores were also not different among the three interventions (p>0.05). These results provide further evidence that MSG and EMS are not more effective than PR in the process of recovery from high intensity exercise.

Role of vision and task complexity on soleus H-reflex gain
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2010) PINAR, SALİH; Pinar, Salih; Kitano, Koichi; Koceja, David M.
There exists extensive evidence supporting the presence of reflex modulation in humans during a variety of motor tasks. The soleus H-reflex has been shown to be modulated during static and dynamic balance conditions as well as during various motor tasks. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two different stance positions and visual conditions on soleus H-reflex gain in 15 apparently healthy adults (mean age = 30.27 +/- 6.92 yrs). The soleus H-reflexes were examined in two experimental stance conditions: two-legged (stable) and one-leg (unstable), and two visual conditions: eyes open and eyes closed. To assess the reflex gain, subjects performed ten trials under each of the four conditions and a soleus H-reflex was elicited during the performance of each trial. For each condition the peak-to-peak amplitude of the H-reflex and the EMG activity 50 ms prior to the stimulus was recorded. Differences in the peak-to-peak amplitudes of the soleus H-reflex for the experimental conditions were compared with a 2 x 2 (Stance x Vision) repeated measures ANOVA. The level of significance was p < 0.05. Results demonstrated significant differences in reflex gain for both the vision (F-1,F-15 = 4.87, p < 0.05) and the stance condition (F-1,F-15 = 14.86, p < 0.05). Although both the stance condition and vision significantly affected the H-reflex gain, there was no interaction between these two variables (F-1,F-15 = 0.17). From these results, we conclude that H-reflex gain was decreased both as stance complexity increased and as visual inputs were removed. Consistent with previous reports, it may be speculated that changes in presynaptic inhibition to the soleus la fibers regulate these gain changes. We propose that vision and stability of stance affect soleus H-reflex gain, but do so without any interactive effects. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of family attitudes and preparation of high school entrance exam on habitual physical activity in children
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2014-02) AGOPYAN, ANİ; Pinar, Salih; Yetgin, Meral Kucuk; Bicer, Bilal; Ozbar, Nurper; Tiryaki, Cetin; Agopyan, Ani; Kaya, Fatih; Ozdol, Yeliz; Laborda, JC; Ozdamli, F; Maasoglu, Y
Physical activity level (PAL) is an important factor to promote and maintain a healthy lifestyle along the whole life cycle. The children and adolescent period is the critical time to acquire positive lifestyle habits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of both high school entrance exam (HSEE) and parental behaviors on habitual PAL of students during the preparation of this exam. Totally 319 Elementary School students (154 girls, 165 boys) between ages of 11-13 were selected randomly for this study. PAL of students were evaluated by using the Beacke Physical Activity Questionnaires. There were a no significant differences between attendance and non attendance to extra courses for HSEE in terms of word activity (WA), sport activity (SA), and leisure activity (LA) scores (p<.05) among the students. It was shown that regular physical activity attendance of mothers plaid a significant role in LA scores (p <=.03) among the students. However, WA, and SA scores of students were not affected from their mother's habitual activities (p<.05). On the other hand, there were significant differences in WA, and SA according to father's regular physical activity attendance (p <=.01). As a conclusion, parental habitual physical activity level played an important role in high score of student's LA. It is recommended to monitor and promote parental physical activity. The longitudinal study of obesity prevalence in different socio-economic status for school children: a case study of obesity prevalence for school children in antalya region
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2012) PINAR, SALİH; Ozer, M. Kamil; Ozdol, Yeliz; Pinar, Salih; Baskan, GA; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S; Ozcan, D
Purpose of Study: to investigate the obesity prevalence among school children in accordance with their gender and socio-economic levels during one year period. Four schools were chosen in accordance with their social-economic levels determined by the Ministry of National Education Directorate in Antalya for this study. Descriptive data were calculated for all variables. BMI was computed as kg/m(2). Skinfold thickness (triceps, biceps, subscapula and suprailliac) variables were measured to calculate fat (%) during one year for 7-8 years old school children. Each measurement was taken at the beginning of fall semester. Repeated measurements ANOVA and independent t test were used for statistical analyses. Girls had higher fat percentages than boys (p<.01). Students with high socio-economic status had higher BMI, fat (%), and body weight than students with low socio-economic status (p<.01). Except fat (%), all variables significantly increased during one year period. Recent studies showed higher child obesity prevalence in developing countries compared to the developed countries. However, the same situation was not observed for Turkey. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection and/or peer review under responsibility of Prof. Dr. Huseyin Uzunboylu

Obesity perception survey among youth in Turkey: instrument development and test-retest reliability
(TUBITAK SCIENTIFIC & TECHNICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL TURKEY, 2019) PINAR, SALİH; Jayawardene, Wasantha; Pinar, Salih; Torabi, Mohammad; Xun, Pengcheng; Ozer, Mustafa
Background/aim: We aimed to develop an instrument that can assess the perceptions and opinions of young people regarding the causes and consequences of obesity and the role of individuals, families, communities, and government in addressing obesity. Materials and methods: A 36-question (101-item) survey was developed by adopting, translating, and revising multiple-choice or Likert-scale questions from existing surveys to assure construct cross-cultural validity. A two-factor mixed-effects model estimated the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to measure the test-retest reliability of questions administered 2 weeks apart to a convenient sample of Istanbul high school and university students, aged 15-25 years (n = 122). Results: The mean ICC for university and high school was 0.70 and 0.63, respectively. University students were more consistent in relating the problem to society and public policy preferences. High school students were more consistent in relating the problem and solution to themselves and their immediate environments. Using a 0.5 cutoff for the ICC's lower 95% confidence limit, followed by reevaluation of the question flow, a 19-question (36-item) survey was retained for adolescents and a 26-question (52-item) survey for young adults. Conclusion: While the survey items have moderate to excellent reliability for high school and university students, it can be administered longitudinally to suggest changes to policies and interventions, and after cross-cultural validation, it can be utilized to compare obesity perceptions across different populations.

Investigation of physical activity levels of male students during school time: does participation in regular sport activities affect on physical activity levels of students?
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2012) PINAR, SALİH; Pinar, Salih; Ozdol, Yeliz; Ozer, M. Kamil; Baskan, GA; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S; Ozcan, D
Physical activity (PA) is an important factor to promote and maintain a healthy lifestyle along the whole life cycle. However, it is not clear whether it is due to the PA itself or sports team participation for elementary school students. Purpose of the study; to make comparison between the PA levels of students attending regular sport activities (Sa) and students not attending regular sports activities (Sb) during school days. The study included 30 male public elementary school students (Sa:9.57 +/- 0.78 and Sb:9.15 +/- 0.38 years old) PA data were obtained by using both objective and subjective measurement methods. Two objective methods (accelerometer-RT3; Heart Rate Monitor, Polar 610i,) were simultaneously used during the 3 school days except for physical education (PE) class. PA Questionnaire (r=.93) was applied one week before the objective measurements. Descriptive data were calculated for all variables. BMI was computed as kg/m(2). Independent t test was used for comparing the variables of two groups. There were significant differences between two groups in terms of heart rate and vector magnitude (VM=root x(2)+y(2)+z(2)). However, there was no significant difference by means of BMI between two groups (p<.05). The Sb group showed higher PA level on school days compared with the Sa group when PE class and regular sport activities are disregarded. That means, children may satisfy daily PA needs during these activities. On the other hand, the amount of PA accumulating during school time seemed inadequate to achieve the current recommendations for health-promotion in all children. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
