Abstract
Objective: This study was planned to examine the knowledge and behaviors of high school students towards rational drug use. Material and Method: The universe of this study was composed of high school students (N = 10226) studying in a district of Istanbul in the 2019-2020 academic year. The research was completed with a total of 835 students, 201 from Anatolian imam hatip high schools, 316 from vocational and technical Anatolian high schools, and 318 from Anatolian high schools. Data in the study were collected using the personal ınformation form and the rational drug use scale. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square test were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The average age of the students participating in the study was 16.12 ± 1.27 and 54.9% were male. It was determined that 46.2% of the students used over-the-counter drugs, and 59.1% of them used over-the-counter drugs because of pain. It was determined that the drug usage information was obtained from the health worker with 48.3% and from the pharmacist with 36.3%. The students' Rational Drug Use Scale average score was 34.02±5.12 and the rational drug use knowledge of 45% of the students was insufficient. The rate of female students with sufficient knowledge of rational drug use was found to be statistically significantly higher than male students (p<0.05). School success, father's education level and high school type were other variables affecting the level of knowledge about rational drug use. Conclusion: It was determined that about half of the students had insufficient knowledge of rational drug use. It is recommended that the school health nurse organize trainings on rational drug use for adolescents and their parents.
