Publication Metadata only An Experimental Study of Game-Based Music Education of Primary School Children(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2008) Coban, Sibel; Tuncer, Imge; Connolly, T; Stansfield, MIn order to determine which method would be more successful in teaching Rythm in Music to the sixth grade 12 year old students, a state primary school (in Turkey) was chosen. An experimental study pre-test and post test method with a control group was held and was carried out with a total of 52 students 26 of whom were in the study group and 26 in the control group. In this study, it was aimed to observe how children respond in learning the two, four and eighth note values and rhythm patterns and whether they were able to identify the notes, reproduce them in beats and write down what they listen to (notation). Teaching to both groups The Element of Rhythm by means of games called Bingo, Wheel and the follow up activity of Write down What You Listen to was the main aim of this study. Researchers collected data by means of: a) a personal information form containing information about each student's background; b) an information test prepared by the researchers to evaluate the knowledge of the student about The Element of Rhythm, in Music and given before and after the experimental study; c) an observation form for each student which was filled in throughout the games played and activities done in the classroom. The duration of the study was for four weeks. The students took a pre-test at the beginning of the four-week period and a posttest at the end. According to the findings after the pre and posttests, the skills and capabilities of the 6(th) grade primary school children in recognizing, playing and writing down the note durations of quarter, half and eighth notes as well as the rhythm patterns consisting of various partitions differentiated substantially according to the teaching method used in the classroom. Furthermore, with respect to the relation to the variable of gender and the variable the financial status of the family and the variable of the parents' educational background and the variable of the parents' occupation point out to slight differences in the achievement rate of the students. Consequent to the research, it is found out that the children in the study group were far more successful than the children in the control group at every stage.Publication Metadata only Choosing the Adequate IT Outsourcing Option: A Comparison Between India and Turkey(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2012) El Khatib, Vujdan; Nayir, Dilek Zamantili; Kolbe, Lutz; Erkan, TEInternational projects and business relations are high-risk undertakings. There may be a high risk of failure for businesses if the risks are underrated. In the last few decades India has arisen as the leading IT outsourcing option, mainly due to the relatively low costs and high levels of IT expertise on offer. However, while India seems to be, at first sight, the most profitable outsourcing option for businesses, when all risks for managing a typical offshore project are taken into account, investment in India through such projects can be very cost intensive. These risk-factors involve for example miscommunications, lack of management control and high turnover of vendor employees. This paper presents the results of 20 expert interviews using a multiple case study design and proves that lower risks exist with a nearshore partner due to cultural, geographic and time proximity. As study material, Turkey and India have been chosen, and are assessed through the perspective of Germany.Publication Metadata only The Impact of Social Intelligence and Sense of Humor on Entrepreneurial Intention: Evidence from Turkey(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2009) Aykol, Sinem; Yener, Mujdelen; Braet, JThe main objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between social intelligence, sense of humor and entrepreneurial intention. In this study it is assumed that social intelligence is an important factor of an individual's entrepreneurial intention and the impact of social intelligence on entrepreneurial intention is stronger when social intelligence is supported by sense of humor. In literature, several factors that influence entrepreneurial intention have been noted. In simple terms, entrepreneurial intention is one's willingness in undertaking entrepreneurial activity, or in other words become self employed. The previous studies on entrepreneurial intention mostly covers the personality factors, behavioral approaches, demographics and contextual elements. There are also various studies and research on social intelligence and humor independently. Social intelligence is a widely researched area in terms of personality factors and traits. It is mostly related to successful outcomes of human behavior. Sense of humor and the role of humor in organizations are becoming increasingly popular among the scholars. However, to the knowledge of the authors, these three concepts have not been combined in literature. A survey was used as a research instrument and was applied to 236 newly graduated university students, in Istanbul, Turkey. Results show a significant relationship between social intelligence and entrepreneurial intention. The explanatory power of our model increases when social intelligence is accompanied by sense of humor. Therefore, it can be concluded that entrepreneurial intention of an individual increases when social intelligence is supported by sense of humor. Although entrepreneurial intention is a widely researched area, our knowledge about its determinants is still limited. In addition, in researching entrepreneurial intention determinants, this study aims represent a different perspective by combining two concepts, social intelligence and sense of humor, which are not widely used in the field. This study also provides evidence to entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurship field from a different cultural and economical setting.Publication Metadata only What is Your Organization's IQ? - A Practical Tool to Gauge Enterprise Intelligence(ACAD CONFERENCES LTD, 2013) Satici, Evren; Vayvay, Ozalp; Janiunaite, B; Petraite, M; Pundziene, AEvery day, organizations create thousands of invaluable information but many of them just fly away with leaving no mark behind. To avoid this undesirable loss, organizations build knowledge management (KM) systems to keep the information recorded in the organization's knowledge base. With increasing investments in KM implementations, measuring organizational benefits of KM initiatives has become an important agenda among KM practitioners. Measuring knowledge provides a mechanism to evaluate, control, and improve on existing performance and forms essential linkages between strategy and actions. The current study proposes that organizations have intelligence which is defined as ability to acquire and apply knowledge skills. They create information from data, identify new information adding value to its processes through analysing the information gathered and use the information in its processes. All these indicate a need for a scale to measure Enterprise Intelligence Index (EII) in order for better understanding of an organization's ability to keep and manage information. To develop EII, total 42 item scale was constructed. 144 mid or senior level IT, HR, CRM, sales, marketing managers of leading finance, IT, telecommunications, FMCG companies in Turkey responded to the survey. Due to the composite structure of the index, the factorial structure was analysed with explanatory and confirmatory methods. The results indicated that there were 8 broad factors of EII - Leadership and Vision, Organization and Structure, Culture, Partnerships, Processes, Measures, Competencies, Technology and Infrastructure with significant level of item loadings. These factors explained the total 53% of overall EII with acceptable levels of inter-item consistency. The study was one of the first steps in understanding the difference between what organizations is currently doing and what it needs to do in order to maintain and improve its performance level regarding with EII. At the macro level the index will enable organizations to compare themselves with each other. At the micro level, it calls attention to areas needing improvement in current and future initiatives. In either case, the index provides robust indicator and basis for decision making and organizational support and development. By the help of EII, organizations will be able to monitor their own progress among years as well as they can benchmark their status compared to the competition at any given time.
