The antibacterial effects of ornidazole on primary molars with infected pulps
(KARGER, 2001) KARGÜL, BETÜL; Kargul, B; Kadir, T
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of a short-term topical application of ornidazole on anaerobic microorganisms, The antibacterial properties of such materials against organisms at infected primary root canals have not been well documented. Twenty infected primary molars in this study were treated using ornidazole (Biteral, Roche), The bacterial contents of the roots were collected with sterile paper points before the application. Freshly mixed ornidazole and sterile saline were placed into the root canals, After 1 week, the bacterial contents of the root canals were collected again. Microbiological analyses were made, Based on our results, it appears that the antibacterial activity of ornidazole caused significant changes in rates of microorganisms (94.53% reduction), Copyright (C) 2001 S. Feeding practices and sucking habits in Istanbul children a clinical study of prevalance and effects on dentition
    (2003-01-01) KARGÜL, BETÜL; KARGÜL B., ÇAĞLAR E., TANBOĞA Ş. İ.
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of feeding practices and sucking habits and their effect on dentition in Istanbul children. 173 children, aged 5 yr participated in this study. The previous breast-feeding, bottle-feeding, pacifier sucking, finger sucking habits were examined. Paired Sample Student t test and ANOVA were used for analysis. In the present study, breast-fed children exhibited bottle-feeding for mean 25.3 ± 22.4 months, pacifier sucking for mean 19.1 ± 13.3 months and finger sucking for mean 28.4 ± 16.1 months respectively. Nonbreast-fed children exhibited bottle-feeding for mean 29.4 ± 20.5 months, pacifier sucking for mean 30.1 ± 12.7 months. Nonbreast-fed children did not exhibit finger sucking. Breast-feeding, bottle-feeding, pacifier and finger sucking did not have any effect on dentition (p>0.05)

Dental trauma in Turkish children, Istanbul
(BLACKWELL MUNKSGAARD, 2003) KARGÜL, BETÜL; Kargul, B; Caglar, E; Tanboga, I
Numerous studies focus on visits to dental clinics for emergent dental problems. Many are all-inclusive, studying traumatic injuries as well as visits for infection and other causes. Epidemiologic studies have focused on the investigation of the prevalence or incidence of dental injury. The patients were evaluated at Pediatric Dentistry, Marmara University Dental School, Istanbul over a 2-year period. For these 300 patients (446 teeth), specific diagnoses were evaluated. Dental injuries that presented most frequently in permanent dentition were crown fractures of enamel only and crown fractures of enamel and dentin. The most frequently presented dental injury in primary dentition were avulsions and crown fractures of enamel. The more frequent treatments for primary teeth were examination only. Bandage restoration, space maintainer were common procedures for permanent teeth.

Bacteriotherapy and probiotics' role on oral health
(WILEY, 2005) KARGÜL, BETÜL; Caglar, E; Kargul, B; Tanboga, I
Oral infections constitute some of the most common and costly forms of infections in humans. The concept of microbial ecological change as a mechanism for preventing dental disease is an important one while altered microbial ecology may lead to dental disease. New methods such as probiotic approaches (i.e. whole bacteria replacement therapy) to eliminate pathogenic members of the microbiota can be investigated. Bacteriotherapy is an alternative and promising way to combat infections by using harmless bacteria to displace pathogenic microorganisms. Probiotics are one of these new agents which are widely used for their therapeutic action. Limited research is available showing that some probiotic cultures may help dental improvement. Present paper focuses on possible oral benefits of probiotics.

An audit of the time to initial treatment in avulsion injuries
(WILEY-BLACKWELL PUBLISHING, INC, 2009) KARGÜL, BETÜL; Kargul, Betul; Welbury, Richard
The prognosis of avulsed teeth depends on prompt and appropriate treatment. Good outcome requires education of the general public and non-dental professionals. Retrospective observational survey of case records of avulsion injuries attending a dental hospital trauma clinic. Data collected included: hospital number, date of birth, gender, source of patient's referral, date of trauma, number of avulsed teeth, place of initial presentation, storage, hours till initial presentation, and initial treatment. One hundred and twenty teeth with avulsion were identified in 75 children. The mean age of the patients was 9.8 years (SD = 2.3 years) at the time of trauma with avulsions recorded in 44 (58.7%) boys and in 31 (41.3%) girls. Only 51 (42.5%) teeth were stored in an appropriate medium before attendance at any site and only 48 (40%) of the teeth were seen within 1 h. 83.3% received emergency treatment at general hospital, 89.7% in dental practice and 92.9% at dental hospital. A minority of avulsion injuries were seen within the first hour and a minority were in appropriate storage medium at presentation. Geographical location plays a huge role in the time taken to reach secondary care. However, improving public and non-dental professional knowledge about tooth storage in avulsion injuries is critical to long-term prognosis of the teeth.
