Determination of skin wound age by using cytokines as potential markers
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2016) TURAN YURTSEVER, NURŞEN; Birincioglu, Ismail; Akbaba, Murat; Alver, Ahmet; Kul, Seval; Ozer, Erdal; Turan, Nursen; Senturk, Ayse; Ince, Imran
Interleukin-1 beta ( IL-1 beta), IL-6, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) play important roles in the wound healing process. In the present study, human wound specimens (n = 50) were collected from cases of death due to injuries from firearms, penetrating trauma by sharp objects and blunt trauma with a known time of injury and death identified by forensic autopsy. Full-thickness tissue specimens were obtained from injured skin sites, and equally sized intact tissues obtained from the same person were used as controls. Protein determination was performed using ELISA according to the Bradford method for each specimen, and results were provided for individual proteins. IL-1 beta levels did not reach statistical significance in any of the wound groups and were not markedly higher than those in the control group. However, IL-6 showed a biphasic pattern and reached statistical significance in the group with wounds less than 30 min old and in the group with wounds more than 18 h old. IL-6 was consistently higher in all wound groups than in the control group. TNF-alpha showed a statistically significant increase within the first 30 min and remained at a high level in all groups except for those with wounds 2-4 h old. On the other hand, EGF was high in all groups excluding those with wounds 2-4 h old and more than 18 h old, but statistical significance was not reached. Our results suggest that IL-6 and TNF-alpha in particular may be used as early-phase markers. We believe that IL-1b and EGF should be more extensively evaluated in further studies. The experience of İstanbul Protocol: efficiency, quality,_x000D_ difficulties in practice
(2019-08-15) TURAN YURTSEVER, NURŞEN; Nurşen Turan YURTSEVER
Objectives: Physicians who witness torture and ill treatment can be placed in a difficult position if theirevidence was not accurately documented. The guidelines and ethical codes of the Istanbul Protocol requiredoctors to attend first and foremost to the well-being of their patients and to remain bound by the principles ofmedical ethics. The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency and the quality of the examination ofdetainees or alleged torture cases by medical doctors and the difficulties encountered in this activity. Methods: A questionnaire was developed and sent to physicians in Black Sea Shore region of Turkey beforeand 1 year after their receiving training according to the Istanbul Protocol. Results: There were 42 physicians who had undergone training according to the Istanbul Protocol and hadanswered the questionnaire; 28.6% of these were women and 71.4% men. These physicians applied the IstanbulProtocol more frequently after having received training on the Protocol Manual as compared to before thetraining. The 52.4% of these physicians reported having been the object of violence or intimidation. Conclusions: It was determined that the physicians' knowledge of physical and psychological examinationincreased following their training according to the Istanbul Protocol.

Estimation of Chronological Age from Postmortem Tissues Based on Amino Acid Racemization
(WILEY, 2018) GÖREN, MEHMET ZAFER; Tiplamaz, Sitki; Goren, Mehmet Zafer; Yurtsever, Nursen Turan
Skin and cartilage tissue specimens from 32 male and 13 female corpses aged between 17 and 50years were collected within 24h after the death. Each specimen was analyzed for the composition of dextro (D) and levo (L) forms of aspartate, glutamate, and alanine. Linear regression models were constructed using ln [(1+D/L)/(1-D/L] equationto define the relationship between the extent of racemization and the chronological age. Aspartate D/L rates from cartilage showed high correlation (r=0.779, p<0.001, n=45). Aspartate D/L rates from skin showed very low correlation (r=0.356, p<0.002, n=44). The multilinear regression model of both aspartate D/L rates of cartilage and skin tissues in 44 cases yielded a coefficient of r=0.828 (p<0.001). In conclusion, only racemization rate of Aspartate both in the skin and the cartilage tissues correlated with the chronological age. Our results may imply that the age can be estimated more precisely if two different tissue specimens are obtained from one corpse.

The new violence type of the era: Cyber bullying among university students Violence among university students
(UNIVERSITATSVERLAG ULM GMBH, 2011) TURAN YURTSEVER, NURŞEN; Turan, Nursen; Polat, Oguz; Karapirli, Mustafa; Uysal, Cem; Turan, Seda Gokce
Backgrounds: Researchers have stated that internet has both positive and negative features just like all the other information technology tools. The most important example to give of the negative outcomes is peer-to-peer cyber bullying. The most general definition of peer-to-peer cyber bullying is to harm individuals deliberately and repetitively through electronic media. Methods: The survey study was conducted in Istanbul Bilgi University Law School, Istanbul Ticaret University Law School and Marmara University Law School by the students to the faculties' students. All results were evaluated with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social for Sciences). Results: 579 persons in the range of 18-30 years were included in the survey. A total of 346 (59.8%) cases were cyberbullied on electronic media. 20.7% stated that they were disturbed through internet, 27.7% by mobile phone and 51.7% both by internet and mobile phone. 80% of those who have been exposed to violence through electronic means have been found to be exposed to more than one form of violence. Conclusions: More than half of our subjects have notified that they have been negatively affected by cyber violence. Prevention strategies should be created as well as the recognition of cyber bullying. (C) 2011 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
