Publication: Zihinsel engelli ergenlerin okul içi sosyal yeterlilik düzeyleri ve davranış problemleri ile anne-babaların sosyal beceri düzeylerinin karşılaştırılarak incelenmesi
Abstract
This survey has been undertaken to examine the correlation between the level of social competence at school as well as problematic behaviours of the students, which are mentally disabled and in adolescence, and level of social skills of their partners. Moreover, it is the sub-objective of the survey that the level of social competence and behavioral disorders of the students differ related to a number of variables or not. The sample of the survey comprises adolescents with mental disability in educable level (ages of 13-20) and their parents. All of the adolescents taking part in the survey are resuming their education at authorized special education schools which give education to students with mental disability at educable level. In this survey, the School Social Behavior Scales, which was adapted to Turkish by Yukay (2003), has been used to measure the level of social competence at school and problematic behaviors of the students. Besides, “Social Skills Inventory”, which wass adapted to Turkish by Yüksel (2004), has been used to measure social skill level of the parents. Furthermore, “Family Information Questionnaire”, which was developed to reach demographic variables, has been practiced on parents. According to the results of the survey, the level of social competence and the level of negative social behavior of mentally disabled adolescents differ related to the age of parents. Again, the level of social competence differs related to the variable of number of siblings. It has been found that the level of social competence and negative social behavior did not show difference related to the variables; age and gender of the adolescent, education of the parents, perceived socio-economic level, birth order and the number of family members. A high level negative correlation between the level of social competence and the level of negative social behavior of mentally disabled adolescents has been identified. No correlation between the level of social skills of the parents and the level of social competence and negative social behavior of the adolescents has been found. Key Words: Social competence, social skills, mentally disabled adolescent, problematic behavior
