Abstract
2. ABSTRACT EXAMINATION OF EMPATHY AND COMPASSION FATIGUE IN NURSES Aim: The aim of this study is to determine empathy behaviors and compassion fatigue on nurses working in inpatient clinics and to examine the relationships between empathy and compassion fatigue. Method: This is a descriptive and correlational study, and it was conducted with 632 nurses working in inpatient clinics of hospitals that has psychiatry clinics in Istanbul between May and August 2021. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals Version (JSE-HP) and Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale (CF-Short Scale), descriptive statistical analyses, t-test, Mann- Whitney U test, Kruskall Wallis test, and Spearman evaluated by correlation analysis. Results: The mean JSE-HP scale scores of the nurses participating in the study were found 102,44±15,48, and the mean CF-SS scores were 64,68±24,71. It was found that there was a significant, weak and negative relationship between JSE-HP and CF-SS. It was determined that there is no statistically significant relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics of the nurses participating in the study, such as age, years of working in the profession, and whether they chose the profession voluntarily or not. Conclusion: It was observed that the empathy level of the nurses participated in the study was above the average score, and the level of compassion fatigue was below the avarage score. It was determined that the nurses who used to work in the psychiatry services had higher empathy levels compared to the nurses working in other services, and the nurses working in the intensive care unit experienced higher compassion fatigue than the nurses working in other clinics.
