Evaluation of firm performance with regards to institutional quality

Abstract

Bu tezde, kurumların kalitesinin firma performansı üzerindeki etkisi gelişmekte olan ülkeler için incelenmiştir. Bunu yapmak için Dünya Bankası Girişim Anketlerinden elde ettiğimiz 127 gelişmekte olan ekonomideki 100.000’den fazla firmadan oluşan panel veriyi kullanıyoruz. Firma performansını hesaplamak için Girişim Anketlerinden elde ettiğimiz firma performansını temsil edecek değişkenler kullanıyoruz. Bu değişkenler duran varlık alımı, istihdam büyümesi ve kapasite kullanımından oluşmakla birlikte her biri firma performansının farklı noktalarına odaklanmaktadır. Kurumların kalitesini hesaplamak için de Girişim Anketlerinden kurumların kalitesini temsil edecek değişkenlerden faydalanılmıştır. Bu bağlamda analiz ettiğimiz regresyonlar üç gruptan oluşmaktadır: (1) tüm girişimlerin ortalaması, (2) küçük ölçekli girişimler ve (3) büyük ölçekli girişimler. Böylece sonuçların büyük ve küçük ölçekli firmalar için nasıl farklılaştığını da kontrol ediyoruz. Ampirik bulgular firmaların duran varlık alımının rüşvet ve siyasi istikrarsızlık tarafından negatif yönde etkilendiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca rüşvet küçük ölçekli firmaların istihdam büyümesine kolaylaştırıcı bir etki sağlarken, büyük ölçekli firmaların istihdam büyümesine herhangi bir etkisi yoktur. Ek olarak siyasi istikrarsızlığın istihdam büyümesine negatif bir etkisi olduğunu gözlemlemekteyiz. Bu negatif etki hem küçük hem de büyük ölçekli girişimler için geçerlidir. Ampirik sonuçlar ayrıca sanayi firmalarının kapasite kullanımı ile siyasi iktidarsızlık ve yolsuzluk arasında negatif yönlü bir ilişki olduğunu göstermektedir. Fakat bu negatif yönlü ilişki sadece küçük ölçekli firmalar için geçerlidir.

In this dissertation, we investigate the effects of institutional quality on firm performance for emerging economies. In order to achieve this, we use a firm-level panel data obtained from World Bank Enterprise Surveys, consisting of more than 100.000 firms in 127 emerging economies. For the measurement of the firm performance, we use variables from Enterprise Surveys representing the firm performance. These variables consist of buying fixed assets, employment growth and capacity utilization, each of which captures the different aspect of firm performance. For the measurement of institutional quality, we also use different varaibles from Enterprise Surveys representing the institutional quality. In this regard, we create three group of regressions based on: (1) the average of all enterprises, (2) small-scale enterprises, and (3) large-scale enterprises. Therefore, we also check whether the results for small enterprises are different from the results for large enterprises. The empirical findings show that buying fixed assets of all enterprises is negatively affected by bribery and political instability. On the other hand, while bribery has a facilitating effect on employment growth of small-scale enterprises, it has no relationship with the employment growth of large-scale enterprises. We also find out that political instability has a negative effect on employment growth. The negative effect also holds true for small and large-scale enterprises. The findings also reveal that capacity utilization of small-scale manufacturing enterprises is negatively associated with political instability and corruption. However, this negative effect does only hold true for small-scale enterprises.
