The relationship between people’s locus of control style and the stress felt in one’s job

Abstract

Stres, kişinin davranışını değiştirmesini gerektiren bir durum ile bu duruma cevap verme kapasitesi arasındaki ilişkidir. Günümüzde hayatın birçok alanında karşılaşılan stres, verimliliğin düşmesine, işe gitmemeye, kişinin yanlış değerlendirmelerde bulunmasına ve düşük morale neden olmaktadır. Stres günümüzde örgütlerdeki verimliliği önemli ölçüde etkilediğinden, stres ile başa çıkmada kişilik özelliklerini de dikkate alan çözümler üretilmelidir. Bu araştırmada, kişilik özelliklerinden kontrol odağı ile işyerinde hissedilen stres seviyesi arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, iş yerindeki belirsizlik, çatışma ve iş yükünün fazlalığı kişinin dışsal kontrol odağına kaymasına neden olmaktadır. Stress is an interaction between a life situation requiring readjustment and the person's ability to cope. It is a major cause of low productivity, high absenteeism, bad judgment, misallocation of resources and poor morale, which is encountered in all fields of life. As stress felt at work is threatening productivity of the organizations, coping strategies within the organizations should be developed by taking the personality variables into consideration. The present study attempts to investigate the relationship between people's locus of control styles and their predictive value on the level of stress felt in one's job. Results revealed that, people's locus of control orientation shifts to external side under the conditions of job role ambiguousness, conflict and to a degree overload.
