Abstract
The primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of partner phubbing (partner’s engagement with a phone during face-to-face interaction) on relationship satisfaction and the mediating role of respect toward the partner in this relationship. The study sample consisted of 231 romantic couples (a total of 462 individuals) recruited online from across Turkey. Participants were couples aged between 19 and 64 years. Data were collected from both partners using validated and reliable self-report scales. During the data collection process, the Partner Phubbing Scale, Relationship Satisfaction Scale, Partner Respect Scale, and a Personal Information Form containing demographic items were administered. To analyze the bidirectional dynamics within couples, the Actor–Partner Interdependence Mediation Model (APIMeM) was employed within a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. In addition, independent samples t-tests and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to examine group differences based on demographic variables. The findings revealed a significant and negative relationship between partner phubbing and relationship satisfaction. Significant actor effects were observed for both genders: individuals who perceived higher levels of phubbing from their partner reported lower levels of respect toward their partner, which in turn was associated with lower relationship satisfaction. Respect was found to mediate the relationship between perceived partner phubbing and relationship satisfaction in a statistically significant manner. Although partner effects were generally weaker, female partners’ respect toward their partners significantly increased male partners’ relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, a high degree of synchronization was observed between partners in terms of relationship satisfaction, perceived partner phubbing, and respect levels, suggesting that emotional experiences in romantic relationships are mutually shaped. Model fit indices indicated that the proposed mediation model adequately represented the data structure. The findings of this study were discussed in the context of relevant literature, and recommendations were provided for both researchers and practitioners.
