Publication: Obsesif Kompulsif Bozukluğu Olan Hasta Yakınlarında Bakım Yükü ve Psikoeğitim
Abstract
Community-based treatments prevailing in mental disorders have resulted in prolonged periods spent with families outside the inpatient institutions and more active role taken by the families in the care of patients. Undesired events and difficulties due to the disease affect family members and create family burden. The burden undertaken by the care-giver may have consequences as depression, anxiety, bur-nout, deterioration of physical health, social isolation and economic hardship. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental disorder which ranks among the top ten of the most disabling medical conditions worldwide. Specifically, it is reported that the burden of the caregiver in obsessive compulsive disorder is as serious as that undertaken in schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Family intervention should not be limited to inpatient period and it must kept in mind that families need help at every stage of the disease. Therefore, in cases with obsessive compulsive disorder there is a clear need for psychoeducational intervention directed at family caregivers. This review aims to set forth the importance of the burden of care undertaken by family caregivers of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder and psychoeducation provided to them
