Abstract

Örtüşme kuramı gerçek bir doğruluk kuramı mıdır? “Önermelerimizin doğru ya da yanlış olmaları ne anlama gelmektedir?” sorusuna cevap olarak geliştirilen örtüşme kuramı, doğruluğu örtüşme kavramı üzerinden tanımlamaya ve analiz etmeye çalışan içerikli (substantial) bir doğruluk kuramıdır. Bu kurama göre doğruluk, önerme veya inançlarımızın hakkında oldukları gerçeklik parçalarıyla bir tür örtüşme ilişkisinden oluşmaktadır. Örtüşmenin doğruluk görüşünün herkes tarafından kabul edilecek kadar genel bir ifade olan gerçeklikle örtüşme sezgisinden (correspondence intuition) ya da örtüşme klişesinden (correspondence platitude) ibaret olduğu ileri sürülmüştür. Eleştirmenlere göre gerçeklikle örtüşme görüşü, herhangi bir doğruluk kuramını dışlamadığı gibi herhangi bir doğruluk kuramını destekleyecek kadar güçlü de değildir. Bu eleştiri iki şekilde bertaraf edilebilir. Bunlardan biri, gerçeklikle örtüşme görüşünün basmakalıp bir ifade olmadığını yani örtüşmenin doğruluk görüşünün diğer doğruluk kuramlarını dışlayacak nitelikte ayırt edici unsurlara sahip olduğunu göstermektir. Örtüşme kuramını, gerçek bir kuram statüsüne ulaştıran şey, sağduyuya hitap eden bir doğruluk görüşünü ileri sürmesi değil, teori-öncesi doğruluk kavrayışımızı sistematik bir yapıya kavuşturmasıdır.

Is correspondence theory a genuine theory of truth? The correspondence theory of truth addresses the question of what it means for propositions to be true or false. According to this theory, truth consists in the correspondence between a proposition and the reality it is about. Some critics argue that this theory merely expresses a widely accepted platitude and thus lacks the capacity to clearly distinguish itself from competing theories of truth. However, this criticism can be refuted in two ways. First, it is toa demonstrate that the correspondence view is not a mere platitude. Indeed, this view possesses distinctive elements that support the correspondence theory against its rivals. Second, even if we assume that the view that “truth is correspondence with reality” is a platitude, the correspondence theory cannot be reduced to this view. Indeed, it has reformulated this view and developed it into a meaningful theory of truth. Ultimately, what enables correspondence to attain the status of a theory of truth is not the common-sensical view that truth is correspondence with reality, but rather its ability to elucidate a central fact about truth and to systematically reconstruct our pre-theoretical understanding of it.
