Abstract
Title of Thesis: The Effect of Baby Smell on Anxiety and Milk Amount at Mothers Whose Babies are Hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Student Name, Surname: Asiye KARA Supervisor Name: Assoc Prof Ayşe KARAKOÇ Program Name: Midwifery Objective: It was carried out to determine the effect of baby smell on anxiety and amount of milk in mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU). Material and Methods: This study is an experimental research. The study was carried out with mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the NICU of two hospitals in Istanbul between 01.02.2021-31.12.2021. Data were collected with the Static and Trait Anxiety Scale, Pospartum Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale and Daily Milk Amount Follow-up Form. The experimental group consists of 28mothers and the control group consists of 30mothers. Results: The mean age of the mothers participating in the study was28.03±5.67 in the experimental group and 28.91±5.16 in the control group. The mean week of gestation of babies was found to be 38.35±2.04 in the experimental group and39.16±1.48 in the control group. The median values of the State Anxiety Scale were43.00(before), 39.00(after) in the experimental group, and 45.5(before) and 38.5(after) in the control group, and no significant difference was found between the groups. The median value of the difference in the amount of milk expressed between the mothers for 1-3days was found to be 130ml in the experimental group and 72.50ml in the control group. Although the difference between the groups was not statistically significant, it seems to be in favor of the experimental group. In addition, a negative significant correlation was found between the level of state anxiety and the amount of milk and breastfeeding self-efficacy in all groups. Conclusion: The effect of baby odor on state anxiety and amount of milk was not found to be significant in mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the NICU. In general, when the anxiety level of mothers decreases, the amount of milk and breastfeeding self-efficacy increase. Baby smell, breast milk, milking, anxiety, self –efficacy.
