Marriage in the context of migration : finding spouses for the Syrian women in Istanbul, Turkey

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın temel amacı göç bağlamında Suriyeli kadınların eş bulmalarındaki zorluklara yol açan etkenleri araştırmaktır. Bu araştırma, Suriyeli kadınlarla gerçekleştirilen niteliksel, yarı-yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeleri analiz ederek dini tutum, ekonomik altyapı, kişilik temelli hırslar, ev sahipliği yapan topluma entegrasyon, gündelik hayat pratikleri ve bunların göç-öncesi ve sonrası dönemde evlilik ve evlilik teklifine dair fikir ve tercihleri üzerindeki etkileri gibi faktörler arasındaki ilişkiyi detaylı incelemektedir. Sonuçlar Suriyeli göçmen kadınların aldığı evlilik tekliflerindeki (öz)güven eksikliğinin, İstanbul’da ikamet eden Suriyeli erkeklerin düşük eğitim seviyesinin ve Suriyeli eğitimli kadınların eğitim seviyesindeki düşüşün, ailelerinin yüksek çeyiz beklentisinin, Suriyeli göçmen erkeklerin düşük finansal ve hukuki istikrarının Suriyeli göçmen kadınların göç bağlamında doğru ve uygun bir eş seçimindeki tereddüdüne katkıda bulunduğunu göstermektedir.

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the factors in finding spouses for the Syrian women in the context of migration. In this research, in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with fifteen Syrian women. The thesis elaborates on the marriage in the migration context relying on the association between religious attitude, economic background, personality wise ambitions, level of integration to the host community, women’s everyday life practices and the impact on views and choices on marriage and marriage proposals. The results have shown that lack in confidence of the marriage proposals being received by the Syrian migrant women, low educational level of the Syrian migrant men, the new gender role practiced by the Syrian woman represented by labor ,the high number of dowries estimated by the educated Syrian migrant women families, dispersed locations of Syrian migrants in the city, low financial and legal stability of the Syrian migrant males influence the process of finding the suitable partner for the Syrian migrant women in Istanbul.
