Holocaust'u izah etmek : Eliezer Berkovits'in özgür irade teodisesi

Abstract

Bu tezde, Eliezer Berkovits’in Holocaust’u kötülük problemi açısından nasıl ele aldığı incelenmektedir. Tezin ilk bölümünde, kötülük felsefi bir problem olarak tanıtılmakta ve probleme teistik ve ateistik temel yaklaşımların izi sürülmektedir. İkinci olarak ahlâkî kötülüğün örneği olan Holocaust’a bir bakış sunulmuştur. Böylelikle Eliezer Berkovits’in Holocaust’a dair açıklamaları daha anlaşılır hale getirilmiş olacaktır. Tezin ikinci bölümünde kötülüğün bir örneği olarak Berkovits’in Holocaust hakkındaki açıklamalarına odaklanılmıştır. Öncelikle Berkovits’in hayatı, çalışmaları ve düşüncelerine dair bilgi verilmiştir. İkinci olarak, Berkovits’in bazı dinî inançlarla bağlantılı olarak Holocaust hakkındaki açıklamaları incelenmiştir. Berkovits’in kötülük problemini yorumlamada seçilmişlik ve Mesih inançlarının etkisine ilişkin tartışması dikkat çekicidir. Berkovits’in Yahudilik tarihinin ayrılmaz bir parçası olan sürgünü ele alma biçimi oldukça isabetli gözükmektedir. Temel dinî inançlara gelince Tanrı’ya atfedilen sıfatlardan bağımsız bir açıklama yapmak neredeyse imkansızdır. Bu nedenle Berkovits’in açıklamalarının merkezinde yer alan hester panim (Tanrı’nın yüzünü gizlemesi) sıfatına dikkat çekilmektedir. Son olarak, Berkovits’in aklî zeminde yaptığı açıklamalara yer verilmiş; gizlenmiş bir Tanrı’nın yaratmasıyla ortaya çıkmış kozmik problem olarak insan özgürlüğü değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma, Berkovits’in düşüncesinde kötülük probleminin tarihsel ahlâkî boyutu olan insanlığın duyarsızlığı ve gücün kötüye kullanımı konularına değinilerek sonlandırılmıştır.

This thesis examines how Eliezer Berkovits handles the Holocaust in terms of the problem of evil. In the first chapter of the thesis, first I introduced the problem of evil, as a philosophical problem and traced major approaches to it from the atheistic perspective, as as well from the theistic one. Secondly, I provided an outlook of the Holocaust, as an example of moral evil. Thus, Eliezer Berkovits' explanations about the Holocaust would be made more understandable. In the second chapter, I focused on Berkovits’ explanation regarding the Holocaust, as an example of evil. First, I provided information about Berkovits’ life, works and thought. Secondly I examined Berkovits' explanations of the Holocaust in relation to certain religious beliefs. Berkovits' discussion regarding the effect of election and Messiah beliefs in interpreting the problem of evil are remarkable. His way of handling the exile, which is an integral part of Judaic history, seems quite accurate. When it comes to basic religious beliefs, it is almost impossible to make a statement independent of the properties attributed to God. Therefore, attention is drawn to the hester panim belief (that God’s face is hidden), which is at the center of Berkovits' explanations. Finally, Berkovits' explanations on the rational ground are included. Human freedom was considered as a cosmic problem that emerged with the belief that God’s face is hidden. The study was concluded by addressing the insensitivity of humanity and the abuse of power, which is the historical moral dimension of the problem of evil in Berkovits' thought.
