Abstract
Amaç: Uyku, bireyin temel gereksinimlerinden fizyolojik gereksinim içinde yer alır. Uyku
sahiptir. Yoğun bakım ünitelerinde görev yapan sağlık çalışanları hastaların iyi bir uyku
uyumalarına yardımcı olmaları gerekmektedir.

Objective: Sleep is included in the physiological need of the individual, one of the basic needs. Impairment in sleep duration and quality is a common condition in patients hospitalized in intensive care units and causes significant problems. Sleep disorders, which can develop in approximately half of the patients hospitalized in intensive care units, have a strong relationship with systemic diseases and mortality. This study was planned as a descriptive study to determine the sleep quality of patients hospitalized in coronary intensive care units. Material and Method: The research was carried out with 150 patients who were hospitalized for at least one night in the coronary intensive care units of two hospitals in Istanbul between March 2023 and May 2023 and were able to communicate verbally. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with the “Patient Information Form” for diagnosing the individual characteristics of the patients and the “Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale”. Mean, frequency, and standard deviation tests were used in the analysis of the data. The MannWhitney U test was used to compare the scale scores between two independent groups based on socio-demographic characteristics, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the scale scores between more than two independent groups. Ethics committee approval was obtained. Results: It was found that 80.7% of the patients were male, 86% were married, the mean age was 58.6 ± 11 (min 21-max 87), more than 40% of them had secondary education and above, 86% of them had a higher income than their expenses. It was found that 76% of the patients had been hospitalized before, 22.7% had mandatory bed rest and 72% had an additional disease. There was no significant relationship between the sleep quality scores of the patients and their sociodemographic characteristics. It was found that 29.3% of the patients had poor sleep quality and 59.3% had moderate sleep quality. Conclusion: It was determined that more than half of the patients hospitalized in intensive care units did not have good sleep quality. Sleep has an important role in our health and wellbeing. Healthcare professionals working in intensive care units need to help patients sleep well. Keywords: Sleep, sleep quality, intensive care
