Publication: Tanzimat Döneminde Çeşme Kocabaşıları (1839-1876)
Abstract
Osmanlı Devleti'nde bir yerleşim merkezindeki Hıristiyan halkın önde gelen kişilerine kocabaşı veya çorbacı denirdi. Kocabaşı, aynı devletin müslüman ahalisinin itibarlı kişileri olan ayan ve eşrafın eş anlamlısı idi. Anadolu'da hıristiyan nüfusunun yoğun olduğu Aydın vilayetinin Çeşme kasabasında bulunan kocabaşıların XlX. yüzyıldaki durum ve faaliyetlerinin açıklanması Osmanlı toplumunun daha iyi anlaşılması bakımından yararlı ve gereklidir.
The affluent persons within the Christian population of a settlement were called headmen in the Ottoman State. Headmen were the equivalent of the "notables" of the Muslim populations. It is useful and necessary to explore the status and the activities of headmen in Çeşme district of Aydın province - a town densely populated by Anatolian Christians, in order to understand better the Ottoman society of the XlXth century.
