Abstract
DETERMINATION OF OPINIONS ABOUT CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION OF PATIENTS PRESENTING AT AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT This research was conducted as a descriptive study for the purpose of determining the opinions of patients presenting at an emergency department about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The research population was comprised of patients who came to a public hospital’s emergency service. The sample was comprised of 656 adult patients who were 17 years or older, had at least a primary school education, and had been under observation for at least two hours in the emergency department. The data were obtained with an 11 item “Personal Characteristics Form” and a six item “Determination of Opinions about CPR” using a face to face interview method. In this research 69.8% of the patients (n=458) were between 17 and 39 years and 53.3% (n=350) were female. Of the participants 62.3% (n=409) stated that they would want a relative with them if CPR was necessary and 58.9% (n=292) thought that their relative would be able to give them moral and emotional support. The majority of those who would not want a relative with them during this process gave the reason as their relatives would be sad, not be able to endure it, or that it would be an unforgettable bad experience. The majority (75%, n=493) of those who would want to be with a relative during CPR gave the reason as they would give support to their relative, they would want them to feel their presence. Those who would not want to be with a relative during CPR in general though that they would not be able to endure watching it, if they died they would not want to see them dying. According to these results it can be said that the majority of patients and patients’ relatives wanted to be near their relative/ patient during CPR. For this reason it is recommended that having patients’ relatives with them during CPR be considered once again. Key words:, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, hospital emergency service, patient, moral, parent
