Gerbode Defect, Importance of Left Ventricle-Right Atrial Shunt

Abstract

Gerbode defect is an abnormal shunt between the leftventricle and right atrium (LV-RA). The shunt can be either congenitalor acquired. The pathophysiology is the injury of the atrioventricularseptum, thus it leads abnormal shunting of the blood.Although it is a rare anomaly, the development of technology in thepediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery era or the increasednumber of adult congenital heart disease patients, when suspected oneshould consider the left ventricle to right atrial shunt.
