İstanbul’da kentleşme ve değişim: “İstanbul”

Abstract

İki bölümden oluşan tez çalışmamın ilk bölümünde İstanbul, Kent, Flâneur ve Kameralı Adam üst başlıkları altında tez’imin dayanağı olan kavramlar incelenmiş, ikinci bölümde “İstanbul” belgeselimin bu kavramlar çerçevesindeki kuramsal yapısı ve biçimsel özellikleri tartışılmıştır. İstanbul’un tarihi, İstanbul bölgesine ilk yerleşimlerden başlayarak, Bizantion ve Konstantinopolis’in Osmanlı tarafından alınana kadar geçirdiği dönemler genel hatlarıyla anlatılmıştır. Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet Dönemi İstanbul’u detaylı incelenerek günümüz İstanbul’unun kentleşme ve değişim politikalarına gelinmiştir. Kent kavramının sosyolojik ve mimari yönden sürekli kendini yenileyen bir kavram olması sebebiyle kent içindeki bireysel ve toplumsal ilişkilerin gelişimine ve mimari yapının belirgin olarak değiştiği modern ve postmodern dönemlere yakından bakılmıştır. ‘Flâneur’ kavramı ortaya çıktığı dönem içinde Walter Benjamin’in kavramla ilgili metinlerinden faydalanarak anlatılmıştır. ‘Kameralı Adam’ filminin bir kente bakış açısı ve döneminin yapısı bağlamında içeriği aktarılmış, yönetmeni Dziga Vertov’un kente gerçekçi yaklaşımından etkilenen bazı kuramcıların fikirlerine de yer verilmiştir. Bütün bu kavramsal çerçeve içerisinde ortaya çıkan filmimin İstanbul’u anlatırkenki amacı, gerçekçi olmak adına seçtiği çekim yöntemleri ve kurgu masasında bu gerçekçiliği ve kendiliğindenliği anlatabilmek için kurulmuş biçimsel yapısı ikinci bölümde tartışılmıştır. Belgesel projem İstanbul’un geçirmekte olduğu kentsel değişimlere bir sorun-çözüm kapsamında değil sadece bir sürece tanıklık etmek bağlamında yaklaşmış ve bu süreci yansıtmaya çalışmıştır.

This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part are analyzed the concepts on which my thesis rests, under the heading Istanbul, City, Flâneur and The Man With The Movie Camera. In the second part, institutional and formal structures within the parameters of these concepts that make up my Istanbul documentary are discussed. Istanbul’s history is told, in broad terms, starting with the first settlements in the Istanbul region to the conquest by the Ottoman Empire of Byzantium and Constantinople. Further, the Istanbul of the Otoman Empire and that of the Turkish Republic have been examined in detail, taking us all the way up to the politics of urbanization and change. Due to the constant revitalization of city’s sociological and architectural structures, this thesis focuses with particular interest on the behavioral development of individual and social attitudes and the transformation of the architectural structure in the modern and post-modern periods of the city. The concept of Flâneur is explained with help from Walter Benjamin’s books and articles.The movie, The Man With The Movie Camera and its viewpoint towards the city is used in the analysis of the thesis; also included are the views of theorists that are influenced by the movie’s director Dziga Vertov’s realistic approach to the city. The filming and editing methods selected for a truthful portrayal of Istanbul are discussed in the second section of the thesis. This project does not take a position in providing any solutions to the problems developing in Istanbul but provides the reader with a testimony of a period undergoing transformation and a reflection upon this process.
