Abstract
Patriarchy appears to be the most influential ideology in our culture and society. Although women participate in the work force with men, her role as a working women is always undermined and secondary to men’s role as a breadwinner. According to the social consensus, the basic responsibility of a woman is her role of a homemaker and child-care. Being influenced by the dominant ideology, this concept of women who are inferior to men is approved by all the ideological devices of state, including the media; therefore the representation of women in media is always biased. Consequently, women in media are usually presented as victims of accidents or murder, housewives or the ones who appear as agents of show business. The aim of this study is to find evidence for above mentioned biased attitude of the media by examining the news articles published in various newspapers and magazines related to the campaign that took place in 1987 “Dayağa Hayır Kampanya Yürüyüşü”. The reason for this campaign was to condemn the beating of women and Also it is aimed to find how patriarcal ideology affects the representation of this campaign and the participants in the media. As seen in the findings of this study, the campaigns and protestations organized by feminist women against the dominant ideology either may go unnoticed or are represented differently than their original purpose by the mainstream media. Few serious newspapers and magazines publish objective news, while most of the popular press present dramatic or sensational portrayals. Because of this kind of represantations, the press stands as an obstacle in front of the spreading of the feminist idea to the masses.
