Tanzimat'tan Cumhuriyet'e İstanbul'da Osmanlı anıtları

Abstract

Tanzimat Dönemi’nden (1839-1876) Cumhuriyet’in ilanına (1923) uzanan süreçte, Osmanlı anıt tasarımları ve uygulamaları Türkiye heykel tarihinin pek fazla üzerinde durulmayan bir kesitini oluşturur. Oysa dönemin dergi, gazete gibi kaynaklarında 19. yüzyıl ortasından itibaren Osmanlı dünyasında bu anlamda bir hareketin başladığı, 20. yüzyıl başında II. Meşrutiyet Dönemi’nde çoğaldığı görülür. Cumhuriyet öncesi dönemde anıt alanında azımsanmayacak bir tasarım ve uygulama çabası vardır. Türkiye heykel tarihinde anıtların tarihini Cumhuriyet öncesinde başlayan bu kıpırdanış ile birlikte değerlendirmek, kentsel mekân ve anıt ilişkisi bağlamında sürekliliği olan bir modernleşme arayışını gözler önüne serer.

Ottoman monument design has not been subject to adequate attention in the period from the Tanzimat era to the Republic. However, sources such as the newspapers and magazines published from the middle of 19th century through the beginning of 20th century during the Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire give us clues that certain developments had already started and that there was a production and/ or planning of monuments before the pre-Republic period. Evaluating the history of monuments within the history of Turkish sculpture alongside these developments reveals an ongoing quest for modernization in terms of the relationship between urban space and monuments.
