Publication: Yeni medya platformlarında popülerleşen şiddet içerikleri ve etkilerine dair bir analiz : Squid game örneği
Abstract
Developing and changing technology has enabled many innovations in the field of media to be effective in human life. With the inclusion of new media in daily life, a radical change and development has occurred, from interpersonal communication to the way of receiving news from the agenda. The same change has also occurred in individuals' TV and movie watching practices. Due to the advantages offered by new media platforms, viewers have now turned to digital broadcasting platforms and started watching TV series and movies on internet-based websites. The aim of this research is to analyze the negative effects of content containing violent elements in new media platforms that have emerged with the developing technology and to create an awareness on how these effects can be reduced. Violent content and its effects, which have become popular on new media platforms, are analyzed through the digital series Squid Game, which is broadcast on Netflix. The series was presented to the audience in 2021 with the age limit of 18, reached millions of viewers in a very short time and remained on the agenda for days. In the series, 456 players, who have financial difficulties, play deadly versions of children's games in order to win the prize money. The violence scenes in the series are shown to the audience in an uncensored and pornographic manner. In order to analyze the effects of the gamified and pornographic presentation of violence, especially on children and young people, 9 episodes in the first season of the series were analyzed by content analysis method. After the analysis, in order to reveal the concrete effects of the series, the news in the press about the effects of the series were also included in the research. It has been observed that the TV series and the violence frequently featured in the TV series have negative effects especially on children and prompt them to commit violence.
