Abstract

The geometrical decoration can be defined as compositions composed of rule-bounded line systems. The geometric compositions which are seen very frequently in Anatolian Seljuk art have currently been very popular and many modern designs of them have been made within the time. This situation attracts attention of many local and foreign researchers. There are many different suggestions related to typological classification, description and analysis of geometrical compositions. It is mentioned by researchers that primary elements of geometrical compositions are lines and researchers make their typological classifications according to line systems. Some typology studies are done according to the figures which appear on the ground as a result of refraction of lines. In many studies, geometrical compositions are tried to be described by stars and polygons which occur on the ground when the line systems are refracted. It is widely encountered in descriptions of geometrical figures to use some terminological expressions which don't have any consensus and to use the names of some similar objects in nature. Using these types of expressions in geometrical compositions which we can describe entirely by the rules of geometry makes the compositions meaningless and prevents researchers ending up with correct results. It is aimed in the research to make a thorough typological description based on lines which are the main elements of geometrical decorations to identify the changing features due to place and material of Anatolian Seljuk geometrical decorations and to make easier and more comprehensible descriptions and analyses.
