Publication: Pyotr Aleksandroviç Rumyantsev'in hayatı ve Osmanlı-Rus münasebetlerindeki rolü
Abstract
Ottoman-Russian relations started directly in the 16th century, deepened politically, economically and socially in the following centuries and became multifaceted. The conflicting interests of the two countries turned into wars many times and these wars became one of the most important factors shaping the relations between the two countries. The military struggle between the two countries paved the way for the emergence of important statesmen and commanders from both sides, who directly influenced the history of both countries. Pyotr Alexandrovich Rumyantsev, who played the most important role in the conclusion of the 1768-1774 Ottoman-Russian War in favor of Russia, is undoubtedly one of the most important of these people. Rumyantsev, who started his military career in the Russo-Swedish War, after proving his military genius and commanding abilities in the Seven Years' War, defeated the Ottoman army in two major battles in the 1768-1774 War and ensured that the war was won by Russia. These achievements made him one of the most distinguished commanders in Russian military history. Rumyantsev, who served for a short time in the 1787-1792 War and fought against the Ottoman Empire, contributed to the modernization of the Russian army strategically, psychologically and morally with his successes on the battlefields, and started an era in the development of Russian military art that would continue with generals such as Potemkin, Suvorov and Kutuzov. This thesis aims to reveal the role of Pyotr Rumyantsev in both Russian history and Russian-Ottoman relations in detail by utilizing the sources and literature of both states and thus, to provide a different perspective on Ottoman-Russian relations.
