Publication: Epilepsi hastalarının öz yeterliğinin belirlenmesi
Abstract
Purpose: The study was conducted methodologically and descriptively for the purpose of determining the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the “Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale” and evaluating the self-efficacy of epilepsy patients.Material and Method: Sample of the study consisted of patients who came to the epilepsy outpatient clinic of a Training and Research Hospital in the province of İstanbul with the diagnosis of epilepsy in May 2016- May 2017. While the first stage of the study, validity and reliability study of the “Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale” was implemented with 330 patients; the second stage was implemented with 200 patients. Study data were collected with the Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale and Patient Information Form.Findings: It was found that the test-retest reliability of the Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale was ,95 and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient ,91. It was determined that the scale was a valid and reliable tool for the Turkish society. In the second stage of the study, mean score of the Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale was found to be 6.80±1.39. It was determined that there was a difference between the score of the Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale and gender, educational background, professional status, economic condition, seizure frequency, regular drug use, number of drugs used, behaviors displayed in case of having a problem with drugs, family support, state of obtaining information about the illness and hiding the illness from other people (p<,05).Conclusion: Epilepsy self-efficacy scores of the patients were found to be above average. It was concluded that the Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale could be used in determining the self-efficacy of individuals suffering from epilepsy in the Turkish society.
