Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of the scripted concept cartoons on the measurement estimation skills and strategy choises of 5th and 6th grade students. The research was realized with the mixed method in which quantitative data were supported by qualitative data. Pre test-post test control group quasi-experimental design was used for quantitative research. The study group consisted of a total of 113 students (56 fifth grade and 57 sixth grade) who were studying in a public school in Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul in the 2017-2018 academic year. Quantitative data were obtained by “Measurement Estimation Test” and qualitative data by “Semi-Structured Interview Form”. After the pre-tests were applied in the experimental group, the scripted concept cartoons were used in the lessons for five weeks for dimensional estimation teaching and then posttests were applied. In addition, at the end of this process, written opinions of all students in the experimental groups about the application process were received and a semi-structured interview was conducted with four students selected according to the purposeful sampling method. Quantitative data were analyzed statistically and qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. According to the results of the study, it was seen that the scripted concept cartoons positively affected the measurement estimation skills of 5th and 6th grade students. Before and after the application; it was seen that 5th and 6th grade students used eight different measurement estimation strategies, unit repetition, visualization, comparison, use of previous information, fragmentation, such as random estimation, reference point use and compression. It was observed that the students who preferred random estimation the most before the application tend to use reference point and comparison strategies that require flexible thinking skills after the application. In addition, it was determined that the students liked the application process and the scripted concept cartoons very much, and their interest in mathematics lessons increased. In line with the findings, the researchers have offered suggestions for those who are to perform any other research on scripted concept cartoons.
