Publication: İklim krizinin medyadaki yansımaları : BBC News Türkçe ve evrensel haberleri üzerine karşılaştırmalı bir söylem analizi
Abstract
Global climate crisis constitutes a probable extinction event that has far reaching ecological, social, economical and political consequences. The recent academic works on the climate crisis started to consider the crisis from an economic and political perspective and brought upon a new subset of terminology to better understand the underlying causes of the crisis in lieu of studying the crisis solely as an ecological and subsequently a technological problem. Therefore, today the climate crisis is the subject of social sciences as much as it is the subject of natural sciences. Study of the political economy of the climate crisis dictates that an interwoven study of historical background, economical infrastructure and ideological superstructure of the climate crisis must be conducted. In order to carry out this interwoven study, in the first chapter of the study, the main characteristics of carbon capitalism, the economic and political aspect of the climate crisis, were discussed. Although the climate crisis is an existential threat, it is necessary to reveal how the ideology of carbon capitalism produces and reproduces itself in the discouse. In order to gain insight into this reproduction, in the second chapter, the political economy of the media, being the primary source of information in modern society, is tried to be understood. In the last part of the study, in line with the themes determined within the framework of the climate crisis literature, news pairs selected from BBC News Türkçe and Evrensel Newspaper’s climate crisis news through purposive sampling technique were analysed through comparative critical discourse analysis method based on Norman Fairclough’s Three Dimensional Communicative Event Model.
