Publication: İstanbul ili 6.sınıf öğrencilerinde ebeveyne bağlanma ile özgüven ve akademik başarı arasındaki ilişkiler
Abstract
The purpose of this two step research was to investigate the relationship between 6th grade students' level of parent attachment, perceived self-concept and academic chievement. The first step aimed to study reliability and validity of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) for Turkish sample. It was found that the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) is a reliable and valid instrument for Turkish sample. In the second step, the relationship between 6th grade students' level of parent attachment, self-concept and academic achievement was examined. Data for the analyses were collected in İstanbul, during the 2002-2003 academic year via self report surveys (IPPA, WIFAM and Demographic Information Questionnaire) and school records of GPA. Our sample is drawn from the students of 9 primary schools (6 of them are public schools, 3 of them are private schools). 421 participants were selected randomly from the 6th graders. Data analyses were conducted by SPSS. Results indicate that the level of attachment to fathers was higher for the students whose mothers are housewives than those students whose mothers have an occupation. Besides, it was found that the level of attachment to mothers was higher for the students whose fathers have an occupation than those students whose fathers are unemployed. The students whose parents are married and living together manifested more attachment to their mothers and fathers than the students whose parents are single. It was found that the level of attachment to fathers was higher for the children who were reared by their parents than the children who were reared by their grandparents, babysitters or other caregivers. The level of attachment to father was found to be higher for the children who grew up in a nuclear family than the children who grew up in an extended family. The level of attachment to father was found to be higher for the children from public schools than those children from private schools. There's a positive relation between attachment to mother and self-concept. There's a positive relation between attachment to mother and academic achievement. There's a positive relation between self-concept and academic achievement.
