Publication: Ortaöğretim coğrafya eğitiminin temel sorunları (Kartal ilçesi örneği)
Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the problems of geography education in Kartal County, to find the reasons of these problems, and to suggest possible solutions. To determine the problems a survey was applied to 350 students and 20 geography teachers in Kartal County which is an historical and rooted county of Istanbul. Statistical data was compared with the criteria of ideal geography education. In the literature review section the basic principles and requirements of geography teaching was stated. And finally, the factors at the base of the problems, and recommendations for possible solutions were presented. All the data which collected during the application were evaluated with SPSS and Excel programs, and frequencies, percentages were presented with tables. To learn whether the participants’ opinions differentiate or not in terms of age, gender, school type, experience, and the school type of graduation t-test and analysis of variance were used. The findings of the study show that the problems of the geography educations comes from the following reasons: textbooks are insufficient, the curriculum is overloaded, schools and teachers are unsatisfactory, the grade passing system causes students to graduate from elementary schools with insufficient knowledge and one-third of the students in Kartal is coming from other counties.
