Abstract
Electric motors, especially direct current electric motors, are the most convenient way of studying the application of magnetic fluid because of motor rapid response to changes in parameters. This study demonstrates the effects of a magnetic liquid (ferrofluid) on a permanent magnet brushed direct current (PMDC) motor. The ferrofluid was applied by smearing it on the shaft of the motor. The maximum amount of ferrofluid was determined to the non-linearity of the characteristics of the motor. The experimental results showed that the ferrofluid affected the motor-operating parameter values, particularly speed and losses, offering an interesting potential to improve efficiency, which consequently results in energy savings. Some equations for the affected parameters have been presented, including the circuit theory. It was seen that by controlling the addition of ferrofluid, the most efficient flux motor parameters could be determined. Some dynamic calculations of PMDC motors are also mentioned, including the principles of magnetic circuits and field theory. Experimental verification by testing a PMDC motor confirmed the positive results. © 2021 IEEE.
