Evaluation of the Depression Status of_x000D_ Syrian Refugee Amputees Living in Turkey

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the depression status of Syrianrefugee amputees living in Turkey using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Material and Methods: The study was conducted in93 (82 male, 11 female) Syrian refugee amputees with an average ageof 35.22±13.56 years. Socio-demographic and descriptive data of theparticipants such as cause/level of amputation, duration of prosthesisuses, marital status, education level, job status, and phantom pain werealso collected. Participants were asked to complete the self-report BDIII.Kruskal Wallis Test was used for multiple comparisons, Independentt test and Mann-Whitney U Test was used for binary comparisons.Results: It was observed that 67.7% of the patients had a Beck DepressionInventory Score (BDIS) indicating minimal depression, 25.8%had mild-moderate depression, and 6.5% had severe depression. Themean BDIS of the female amputees was found to be statistically higherthan that of the male amputees (p:0.039). When the etiology of amputationwas compared, it was observed that the diabetes/chronic diseasegroup had a significantly higher average BDIS than that of the others(p:0.045). Conclusion: Patients, though as refugee, live in Turkey inrelatively better conditions and have been receiving adequate medicalsupport, both of which may be mitigating factors reducing the psychologicalpressure. Factors such as the large and inclusive Syrian familystructure and solidarity among refugees are also considered to be effectivein reducing their BDIS.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’de yaşayan Suriyeli mülteci_x000D_ amputelerin depresyon durumlarını Beck Depresyon Ölçeği-II_x000D_ (BDÖ-II) kullanarak araştırmaktı. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışma yaş_x000D_ ortalaması olan 35,22±13,56 yıl olan 93 (82 erkek, 11 kadın) Suriyeli_x000D_ mülteci ampute üzerinde gerçekleştirildi. Olguların sosyo-demografik_x000D_ özellikleri ve ampütasyon sebebi/seviyesi, protez kullanım süresi, medeni_x000D_ durum, eğitim seviyesi, iş durumu ve fantom ağrısı gibi tanımlayıcı_x000D_ bilgileri alındı. Olguların BDÖ-II’yi doldurmaları istendi. Çoklu_x000D_ karşılaştırmalar için Kruskal Wallis Test, ikili karşılaştırmalar için Bağımsız_x000D_ t test Mann-Whitney U Test kullanıldı. Bulgular: Hastaların_x000D_ %67,7’sinin minimal, %25,8’inin hafif-orta, %6,5’inin ise şiddetli seviyede_x000D_ depresyonu gösteren Beck Depresyon Puanına (BDP) sahip olduğu_x000D_ görüldü. Kadın amputelerin BDP ortalaması erkek amputelerden_x000D_ istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksek bulundu (p:0,039). Amputasyon_x000D_ etyolojisi açısından karşılaştırıldığında, diyabet/kronik hastalık_x000D_ grubunun diğerlerinden anlamlı düzeyde yüksek ortalamaya sahip olduğu_x000D_ görüldü (p:0,045). Sonuç: Türkiye’de, mülteci olarak da olsa, göreceli_x000D_ olarak iyi şartlar altında yaşamaları ve yeterli tıbbi destek_x000D_ alabilmeleri, hastalar üzerindeki psikolojik baskıyı azaltıcı unsurlardır._x000D_ Geniş ve kapsayıcı Suriye aile yapısı, mülteci dayanışması gibi unsurların_x000D_ olguların BDP’larını azaltmakta etkin olduğu düşünülmektedir.
