Abstract
22 Mart 1904 yılında İstanbul, Beyoğlu’nda dünyaya gelen Nurullah Berk, Heybeliada ilkokulunda başlayan eğitimini Nişantaşı ve Galatasaray liselerinde sürdürdü. 1920 yılında girdiği Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Âlisi Resim Bölümü’nü 1924 yılında bitirdi. Nurullah Berk, Ağaç, Akademi, Ankara Sanat, Ar, Arkitekt, Artist, Büyük Doğu, Cep, Çığır, Esi, Güzel Sanatlar, Hayat Tarih, İnanç, Kültür Dünyası, Kültür Haftası, Kültür ve Sanat, Milliyet Sanat, Mimarlık, Muhit (Yeni), Perde ve Sahne, Rövü Review, Sanat, Sanat Çevresi, Sanat Dünyamız, Sanat ve Sanatçılar, Servetifünun (Uyanış), Turkish Treasures, Türk Dili, Türk Yurdu, Türkiyemiz, Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu Belleteni, Ufuklar, Varlık, Varlık Yıllığı, Yaşayan Sanat, Yedigün, Yeditepe, Yelken, Yeni Adam, Yeni Gün, Yeni İnsan, Yeni Mecmua, Yeni Sanat, Yıllık Araştırmalar, Yücel dergilerinde makaleler yazdı.
Born in March 22, 1904 in Istanbul, Nurullah Berk started his education at Heybeliada Elementary School and continued at Nişantaşı and Galatasaray High Schools. He enrolled in the Painting Department of the Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Âlisi (Academy of Fine Arts) in 1920 and graduated in 1924. The same year, he decided to continue his education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and returned back to Turkey in 1928 after he completed his education. Along with a group of friends, he participated in the foundation of the Association of Independent Painters and Sculptors in 1928, and of Group d in 1933. It was in those years that Nurullah Berk started writing to have their voice heard and never put down his pen for the rest of his life. In a sense, Berk assumed the role of spokesman particularly for Group d, wrote on the goals and exhibitons of the groups he was a member of as well as the artistic views of other members, his thoughts on the Turkish and world art, art movements, and the problems of art in his articles as well as reviews. His writing of reviews as a painter invited the reaction of certain circles, in turn making him the target of criticisms, which eventually drove him away from this undertaking. Nurullah Berk wrote articles for a multitude of journals and magazines including Ağaç, Akademi, Ankara Sanat, Ar, Arkitekt, Artist, Büyük Doğu, Cep, Çığır, Esi, Güzel Sanatlar, Hayat Tarih, İnanç, Kültür Dünyası, Kültür Haftası, Kültür ve Sanat, Milliyet Sanat, Mimarlık, Muhit (Yeni), Perde ve Sahne, Rövü Review, Sanat, Sanat Çevresi, Sanat Dünyamız, Sanat ve Sanatçılar, Servetifünun (Uyanış), Turkish Treasures, Türk Dili, Türk Yurdu, Türkiyemiz, Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu Belleteni, Ufuklar, Varlık, Varlık Yıllığı, Yaşayan Sanat, Yedigün, Yeditepe, Yelken, Yeni Adam, Yeni Gün, Yeni İnsan, Yeni Mecmua, Yeni Sanat, Yıllık Araştırmalar, Yücel. In his articles, the author not only tackled art within a very wide perspective but also undertook to convey to the reader his thoughts, assertions, ideals, solution proposals by touching upon various thoughts, studies, and publications on the issue. Besides informing the reader extensively, this attitude also aimed at perpetuating the interest of the reader. It is very obvious that Berk wrote depending on the particular audience of periodicals to this end while his style in some of his articles, the subjects he chose the words and terms he used prove that he addressed a more intellectual group of readers. He introduced many invaluable books to the art bibliography including, Leonardo da Vinci, Modern San’at (Modern Art), Türk Heykeltraşları (Turkish Sculptors), Türkiyede Resim (Painting in Turkey), Sanat Konuşmaları (Art Dialogues), La Peinture Turque, Modern Painting and Sculpture in Turkey, Bellini’ler (The Bellinis), Resim Bilgisi (Knowledge of Painting), Paolo Uccello - Piero della Francesca, Sandro Botticelli, Fikret Moualla, Ustalarla Konuşmalar (Dialogues with Masters), İstanbul Resim ve Heykel Müzesi (Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture), 50 Yılın Türk Resim ve Heykeli (Turkish Painting and Sculpture of 50 Years), Türk ve Yabancı Resminde İstanbul (Istanbul in Turkish and Foreign Painting), Başlangıcından Bugüne Türk Resim Sanatı Tarihi (Cilt 2) (History of Turkish Painting Since its Inception), Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türk Resmi (Turkish Painting During the Republican Era). He passed away on January 9, 1982 at his house in Valideçeşme, Istanbul and was buried in his beloved Heybeliada in accordance with his will.
