Publication: Eş zamanlı bilgisayar tabanlı iletişim teknolojileri: yabancı dil sözel becerilerin geliştirilmesi açısından karşılaştırma
Abstract
The aim of the study is to find out the effects of computer mediated communication, namely synchronous written and oral chat, on the development of oral language skills. The study group consists of 90 students from IMKB Zeytinburnu Vocational High School, Istanbul. The study group is divided into three equivalent groups; experimental group I (oral chat), experimental group II (written chat) and control group. For the study, which lasted for 4 weeks, an internet site was created which contained the chat applications and to which only the participants in the study were allowed to enter. The tasks for the chat sessions were designed according to the rules of Task Based Language Teaching and the sessions were recorded. Five different types of data were collected. These are; (a) the students’ levels of speaking skills, (b) the students’ levels of foreign language anxiety, (c) the amount of words produced in the target language in all the sessions, (d) the effects of the task types, that were used for designing the chat topics, on the number of words, number of turns and number of words per each turn, and (e) the students’ thoughts about the chat sessions. The results of the study indicate that computer mediated communication, especially synchronous written and oral chat have a positive effect on the development of students’ speaking skills. There was a significant decrease in the students’ language anxiety levels for the written chat group. The fact that %90 percent of all the talk during the sessions were in the target language, alleviates the need for native speakers for chat applications. The results on the effects of different task types emphasize the need for further, more detailed studies. The students who took part in the study generally expressed positive views about the chat sessions. In conclusion, computer mediated communication provides key opportunities for the deveopment of foreign language speaking skills. In our country, new studies should be supported and interest should be aroused on the topic in order to take advantage of the potential benefits effectively.
