Üniversite öğrencilerinin biyoteknoloji ve genetik mühendisliği çalışmaları ile ilgili tutum, bilgi ve biyoetik görüşlerinin değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Bu çalısmanın amacı üniversite ögrencilerinin biyoteknoloji çalısmalarına karsı olan tutumlarının, bu konular ile ilgili bilgilerinin ve biyoteknolojik çalısmaların uygulanması ile iliskili görüslerinin arastırılmasıdır. Bu amaçla bir üniversitenin üç fakültesinden 222 üniversite ögrencisi ile nicel ve nitel çalısmalar yürütülmüs ve ögrencilerin biyoteknolojik çalısmalar ile ilgili tutuları, bilgileri ve görüsleri analiz edilmistir. Ölçek degerlendirmesi sonucunda ögrencilerin biyoteknolojik çalısmalara karsı tutumlarının çesitlilik gösterdigini ve konuya baglı oldugu belirlenmistir. Fakülteler açısından ölçek sonucunda istatistiksel olarak belirgin farklılıklar bulunmus, biyoloji bölümü ögrencilerinin fen bilgisi ve tıp fakültesi ögrencilerine göre biyoteknolojik çalısmalarda daha destekleyici oldukları belirlenmistir. Bilgi ve kavram testinin kavramsal ve istatistik analizi sonucu, bütün ögrencilerin biyoteknoloji, genetik mühendisligi ve klonlama hakkındaki bilgilerinin zayıf oldugunu, ancak biyoloji bölümü ögrencilerinin, diger ögrencilerle karsılastırıldıgında daha fazla bilgiye sahip olduklarını göstermistir. Bunun yanı sıra biyoetik ikilemlerle ilgili olarak, ögrencilerin yanıtlarının ve nedenlerinin konuya baglı oldugu ve genel olarak biyoetik egitimine önem verdiklerini ve biyoloji ve genetik derslerinin biyoetik içermesi gerektigini düsündüklerini göstermektedir.

The objective of this study is to investigate university students’ attitudes towards biotechnological studies, their knowledge in relation to these issues and their bioethical perceptions in relation to the application of biotechnological studies. Ouantitative and qualitative studies were conducted on university students. These included a survey of 222 students from three faculties in one university and a complementary analysis of their attitudes, knowledge and perceptions with respect to biotechnological studies. Results indicated that university students’ attitudes towards biotechnological studies showed discrepancy and context dependence. Statistical significant differences were found between students from different faculties in terms of the results of the questionnaire and it was found that biology students were particularly supportive of biotechnological studies compared with science education and medical students. Conceptual and statistical analysis of the knowledge and concepts test showed that although all of the students’ have poor knowlege about biotechnology, genetic engineering and cloning, biology students have more knowledge compared to other students. In addition, assessment of the students’ responses and type of reasons related to bioethical dilemmas showed that students responses and reasons were context dependent and the results suggested that students generally regard bioethics education to be important and that genetics and biology lessons should include bioethics.
