Using an expert system to guıde the ınvestment decısıons of small to medıum scale customers

Abstract

Portfolio managers and big scale investors use their knowledge on the financial tools and watch market conditions while taking their investment decisions. On the other hand, small-scale customers do not have the knowledge of the portfolio managers, and the amount of investment they make do not cover costs associated with professional help. This project aims to solve this problem by implementing an expert system that will guide the small-scale investors in their investment decisions. Proposed model will help customers by offering the experience of a portfolio manager, and it will help financial institutions by enabling them to reach small-scale customers at low cost. Financial institution running the expert system will be able to design its own expert system specific to the products it offers to its customers, and its own methods of guiding the customers. The model supports multi currency, includes economic expectations and past returns. It is implemented using Java programming language and relational database structure. In the Introduction, the driving forces of the model and limits and objectives of the model are presented. Expert Systems and other similar models are analysed in the second section. Third section focuses on structure of the system and the usage of the model. Fourth section focuses on the Turkish implementation and several sample tests. Conclusion summarises how objectives are met, the strengths and weaknesses of the system, and future directives. Source codes and other technical details are included in the appendices.

Portföy yöneticileri ve büyük yatırımcılar, yatırım kararları alırken belirli bir bilgi birikimi ile bu kararlarını alırlar. Bununla birlikte, küçük yatırımcılar, genellikle yatırım araçları ve piyasa koşulları konusunda yeterince bilgi sahibi değillerdir ve portföy büyüklükleri profesyonel destek almalarına uygun değildir. Bu projede, küçük yatırımcıların yatırım kararlarında yardımcı olacak uzman sistem tasarlanması amaçlanmaktadır. Bahsedilen uzman sistem, hem bir uzmanın birikimi yatırımcıya aktaracak olması nedeni ile yatırımcılar için, hem de düşük maliyetle her türlü yatırımcıya ulaşma olanağı sağladığı için finansal kuruluşlar için faydalıdır. Özellikle Türkiye gibi yüksek enflasyonlu ülkelerde, küçük miktarlarda yapılan yatırımların bile önemli olması, modelin kullanım alanını genişletmektedir. Tasarlanan sistem, finansal kuruluşların kendilerine özgü bir uzman sistem yaratmasına imkan sağlayacak şekilde, değişik finansal araçların, beklentilerin girilebildiği, piyasa getirilerini değerlendirebilen, birden fazla para cinsinde çalışabilen, ve karar mekanizması bir uzman tarafından oluşturulan bir sistemdir. Java programlama dili ve veri tabanı altyapısı kullanılarak tasarlanmıştır. Bu tez bünyesinde, ilk bölümünde bu bir sisteme ihtiyaç duyulmasına neden olan koşullar anlatılmış, sistemin limitleri ve amaçları verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, uzman sistemler tanıtılmış, ve benzeri sistemler araştırılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde, sistemin yapılmasında kullanılan yapılar, programlar ve sistemin kullanılma şekli anlatılmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde örnek Türkiye uygulaması detayları ile verilmiş, ve örnekler incelenmiştir. Sonuç bölümünde elde edilenler ve ileride yapılabilecekler anlatılmıştır. Proje bünyesinde yaratılan programların kaynak kodları ve araştırmada kullanılan veriler hakkında detaylı bilgiler eklerde verilmiştir.
