Publication: 20. yüzyılda İstanbul İhsaniye Mahallesinin sosyomekansal dönüşümü
Abstract
The thesis describes and analyzes the social and spatial transformation of Istanbul Ihsaniye district from the outset of the 20th century until today, based on the primary sources such as memoirs, maps and urban plans, in-depth interviews with district residents, long term participant observation in the district and secondary literature. Having outlined the history of Ihsaniye distric from its foundation to the beginning of the 20th century in the first chapter, the second chapter sets out to depict the spatial transformation of the district focusing on streets, historical buildings and artifacts, and dwellings. The third chapter analyzes the social transformation of the disctrict through a comparison of the portrait of “traditional neighborhood” the district had at the outset of the 20th century with that of the transformation the district underwent from the 1960s on. The thesis argues that altghough the Ihsaniye district has gradually lost its character of a neighborhood in terms of being a socio-cultural and political-administrative unit, it remains a neighborhood phenomenologically, serving people’s need to familiarity, trust/ safety, and belonging in their daily experiences of urban space. Lastly, the thesis attempts to explore the images and mental maps of the district the residents have using the methods of in-depth interview and mental map drawing.
