In order to investigate bactericidal activity of sera obtained from sham operated and splenectomized rats; experimental pneumonia was constituted by inoculating 3 x 108 cfu/ml (7 x LD50) suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa intranasally 12 weeks after inoculation. IgM levels, serum bactericidal activity (SBA) and contribution of imipenem to this activity was determined in sera collected before and 12 days after inoculation. Test strain which was found to be resistant initially converted to be susceptible to the sera of sham operated rats obtained after infection with or without aid of antimicrobial. However sera collected from splenectomized rats after infection showed SBA in the presence of imipenem only. In conclusion; to reduce high mortality rate of Pseudomonas sepsis in splenectomized patients one can benefit this effect of imipenem on SBA.
